Drybrush the center and the top portion of the other sections of the pumpkin with Pumpkin plus Yellow Ochre. in a smaller area in the center section drybrush with Yellow Ochre plus Lt Buttermilk and last apply a Lt Buttermilk highlight. This will make it very bright. Shade with Burnt Sienna, across the bottom and on each side of the center section. Add stems with Hauser Med Green, highlight with Hauser Lt Green, and shade with Hauser Dk Green. Indicate some leaves using a side float with the greens. Sunflowers: These are simpler than the other flowers so some of the steps had been left out. Centers are stippled in using a small stippler and you don't have to clean the brush between the colors, You will start with the darker colors and as you go lighter, remember to paint 2 smaller area, not covering all of the darker color. Sunflowers have Burnt Umber centers stippled, and then pick up Burnt Sienna, and then Yellow Ochre, Petals: Use @ *6 flat shader to form the petals with one stroke. Wicker Horn of Plenty: base with Burnt Umber, add abit of Black on the lower edge to make it darker, pick up some Burnt Sienna and put in the center, Just slip slap It around. Working in 2 loose manner, Use the chisel edge of the brush or a rake, and put In the lighter pieces of wicker with Sable Brown. Switch to a liner brush and pick up Buttermilk with the Sable and keep adding the pleces working in the loose manner, and adding more Buttermilk in the lighter areas until you have some nice texture. IF you get to light, go back and shade along the bottom and under the rim of the basket with Burnt Umber with a touch of Black. Pumpkin; Basecoat with Canyon Orange. Shade with Burnt Sienna. Drybrush with Jack-o-lantern Orange, then add White to it gradually until you bulla tthe highlights. Green Gourd next to pumpkin: Basecoat with Hauser Med Green. Paint the bump on top with Buttermilk. Paint the lines with Hauser Dk Green and float a dark shade around the gourd, and then around the white bump on the gourd. shade with Hauser Med Green on the white bump. Build the highlights on the green part with Hauser Lt Green, then adding White to It until you have the highlights bright enough. On the white part add White highlights and the stem in the center. The stem Is Burnt umber with a Buttermilk highlight. Pointed Gourd in front of pumpkin: Base with True Cchre. Stipple Yellow Ochre to make the center raised portion. Paint Jack-o-Lantern Orange stripes. Highlight points with Yellow Ochre, Float around the center with Burnt Umber and on the center area float with Burnt Sienna, Add highlights with Lt Buttermilk end White. The center is Burnt Umber with Buttermilk highlights. Turnips: Base with Dio Purple plus Buttermilk ‘Shade with Dio Purple. Float White on the bottom of the one turnip and drybrush the highlight on the other, Add the stem with the greens, ‘Yellow onions: Paint True Ochre, shade with Burnt Sienna, and highlight with Buttermik. Add Burnt Sienna lines and hairs and highlight the hairs with buttermilk Apple: Base with Country Red, shade with Deep Burgundy, highlight with Red plus Moon Yellow. Add stem with Burnt Umber, highlight with Buttermilk, ‘Add White shine. Carrots: Base with Canyon Orange, shade with Burnt Sienna, highlight with Yellow Ochre, Broccoli: Base with Hauser Dk Green, stipple Hauser Med Green, highlight with Grey Sky and then Grey Sky plus Write. Highlight the Bright Orange ones with Cad Yellow and then a bit of Cad Yellow plus White. Highlight the True Ochre ones with Cad Yellow and shade at the base with Cad Orange. Highlight again with Cad Yellow plus White. The centers have Sable Brown drybrushed first and then add highlights with True Ochre. Float Black around the centers. Horn of Plenty: Use along liner brush and keep the lines loose, start with the darker colors and gradually work to the light colors and keeping it the lightest in the center areas, Brush mix the colors using Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, and Light Buttermilk. After you finish, go back and shade the bottom with Burnt Umber and a smaller float along the top, Purple cabbage: Base with Lavender and work a bit of Lilac Into the center as you basecoat It, using a slip slap motion. Shade the center with a bit ‘of Plum, Shade under the leaves and around the ‘outside with Dioxazine Purple. Highlight with Lilac and then add a bit of White to the Lilac, Breecoll: stipple with Hauser Dark Green picking up Dio Purple and stippling in the shadows. Next pick up Hauser Lt Green and apply the highlights apply the heaviest paint on the top and working down with less paint on your brush. ‘You may do this all at one time without washing the brush and you ill get brush mix quality. Tap on a few highlight by adding Lt Buttermilk for a few final highlights. Onion Tops: Basecoat with Hauser Med Green, shade with Hauser Dk Green, and highlight with Hauser Lt Green, and a few ends with Lt Buttermilk, ‘Small Gourd/squash under the Broccoll: Basecoat with Pumpkin, Shade with Burnt Umber, Stipple a bit Of Hauser Med Green and Dk Green in the creases, adda few streaks and dabs on the rest of It. Bull the highlights by dryorushing Pumpkin plus Yellow Ochre and gradually more Yellow Ochre and at the last a bit of Lt Buttermilk. The stem In the center is based with Burnt Umber plus Buttermilk, shaded with Burnt Umber and highlighted with Lt Buttermilk. Red Potato: Base with Country Red plus Raw Sienna, Shade with Burnt Umber and make eyes. Highlight eyes with basecoat plus Lt Buttermik and drybrush on the center portion of the potato. Shade again with Black Plum. Irish Potato: Base with Raw sienna plus Buttermilk, Shade with Raw Sienna and then Burnt Umber. Make eyes with Burnt Umber. Highlight with Lt Buttermilk, Shade along the bottom and next to horn with Black Plum, Yellow onions: Paint True Ochre, shade with Burnt Sienna, and highlight with Buttermilk, Add Burnt Sienna lines and hairs and highlight the hairs with buttermik. Reddish Purple onion: Basecoat with Country Red. Shade with Dio Purple. Build the highlight with Country Red plus Buttermik. Large Orange Gourd: Sasecoat with Burnt range. Shade around the outside with Burnt Umber, more at the bottom and less at the top. Add Hauser Dk Green to the top and the lines coming out into the orange area to make the sections. Bulld the highlights in these sections gradually, starting with Pumpkin, then Pumpkin plus Tangerine, then Tangerine and Yellow Ochre and on the lower part go a little lighter by adding Lt Buttermilk. (thie is to make it appear closer) Stipple Hauser Med Green on some of the darker areas of green, more to the front and the bump on top. There is some orange on the top bump also. Use a mix of Burnt Umber and Buttermilk to paint the lines on the top bump and around the bump, darker at the back and lighter in the front areas There are some bumps and the center stem area that are painted with Burnt umber and Lt Buttermiik stippled or floated on the top of each bump, again keeping the ones in front lighter than the ones at the back of the gourd. You may float Burnt umber on the back ones, Pointed Gourd: Basecoat with True Ochre.21 Drybrush stripes with Yellow Ochre and some with Pumpkin. Shade around the top oump with Burnt umiver, along the bottom edges almost to the top, ‘and around the center stem area Stipple Burnt Umber in the center and then stipple Buttermilk cover it, more on the top edge. Add a few Lt Buttermilk highlights. ‘Small yellow squash at the far right side: Basecoat with True Ochre. Shade with Honey Brown. Highlight with Yellow Ochre plus Lt Buttermilk and applying with a drybrush, Stipple abit of Hauser Dk Green inthe creases, Add stem with a dab of Burnt Umber under and a highlight of Buttermilk stems and Berries: Palnt stems with Burnt Umber in a loose manner and highlight some with Buttermilk, Paint the berries with Country Red, Float with Country Red plus Yellow Ochre on the upper portion. shade the bottom portion with Deep Burgundy. Highlight with a dab of Buttermilk and smush it with your Finger. Sunflowers andleaves: Refer to the directions for the sunflowers on the canisters. Finishing: Sparingly. Stipple or sponge lightly with True Ochre and a bit of Burnt Sienna around the plece, some in front of the items, and some in the background, Highlight with Yellow Ochre and a tiny bit with Buttermilk Look your plece over carefully. To separate or push the items back, shade with Burnt Umber and in the darkest areas use Dio Purple. Finish with your favorite varnish x ms NE , Wi MI Fy \ x 24 YEAR OF THE ROOSTER Surface: Arched Top Calendar with insert from The Artist Club, # 184103 American Decoart palette: Black, White, Lt Buttermilk, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, True Gold, Moon Yellow, Calypso Blue, Country Red, Grey Sky, Honey Brown, Antique Gold, True Ochre Loew-cornell Brushes: #1 Script Liner, #0 Liner, 1/4" Stipplers, #68, #12 Shaders, 1/8” Lettering Brush ( a small flat will work also), 1/4” Small Rake Mise. Supplies: Chicken Wire Stencil, sponge for Faux Planting, Black Americana Satin Enamel Prep: The calendar is painted with Americana Satin Enamel, After It le very dry. sand the edges to give it @ worn look. By using the Satin Enamel, you do not have to varnish, which is nice over the black because sometimes that will leave a white film. OF course you may paint It In your choice of color. Basecoat the pane! or the back of the calendar with Grey Sky. Let Gry and apply the pattern Rooster: The rooster is painted with the same method that | have previously used in the other Chicken Pot Ple books, This ls a loose method using the chisel side of a email flat. Also | start with a darker color and apply lighter colors on top leaving hints of the darker colors in some areas and more For the shaded areas. Start with the breast and apply a grey made with Black plus White. Use the chisel side of the brush to basecoat to start the direction of the feathers. Alco if you start at the back and paint the feather that lay over, working them up to the neck area. Keep picking up more White and chisel over the darker color, continuing to add more Mhite. The final highlight Is Lt Buttermik. Use the same colors to paint the wing, Body: Work up into the neck and back are with Brown Umber and Burnt Sienna, all the way under the gold tail feathers, Look at the picture or pattern to see the direction of the feathers, The back Is left darker and the top of the wing. For the final highlight use True Ochre, The neck feathers are short strokes and lighter. From the Burnt Sienna, pick up Honey Brown, then True Ochre then True Ochre plus Moon Yellow. Tip some of the feathers off with Moon Yellow plus Lt Buttermilk, Next paint in the Black tall feathers with Black. Using a smallrake, a # 1/4” and Grey Sky to highlight these, pulling and lifting in the correct direction, The blue Feathers are next and are also based Black. Then use Calypeo Blue end the small rake to add the blue details. Some of them you may Just highlight with a small float using the side of 2 email Fat. The next feathers will be the gold ones and they overlap the blue ones. (These were based in with the body up the back.) Pull these in with the side of a flat ‘and stroking them In, First with Honey Brown, then some with True Ochre. Highlight them with Antique Gold pus Lt Buttermilk, getting lighter on the lightest ones, You may need to shade with Burt Sienna to separate some of these. The wattle and como and around the eye Is painted with Country Red, shaded with Country Red pls Black. Stipple in the lights first with Country Red plus Meon ‘Yellow then Moon ‘Yellow plue Lt Buttermilk on the lightest areas, The eye Is a black dot with a White highlight. The beak Is True Ochre, shaded with Burnt Sienna and highlighted with Moon ‘Yellow and then Lt Buttermilk 1e feet are based with True Ochre, shaded on both sides with Burnt Sienna, and then again on the back side with Burnt umber. Add a little Moon Yellow highlight on the front let and a couple of the front toes. The lines are Burnt Umber. The toenalis are Black with @ White highlight. Finishing: Use a stencil or freehand the chicken wire with True Ochre and then the thinned Black to outline ‘some of these. The chicken wire frames the rooster. ‘The lettering is painted with the thinned Black using a 1/8" lettering brush. Quickly while the red is still damp, tap in some Country Red plus Moon Yellow to start the highlights. 3. The next row of petals will go between, but overlapping the back petals and will be smaller and painted with Country Red plus Lt Buttermilk, ‘You may brush mlx but keep the value a few shades lighter than the back petals. (mass production) You may want to paint one complete flower before starting this process, just for trial Shading: Shade the back row of petals with Deep Burgundy, the second and third row of petals with Country Red, shading the front petals near the center of the flower also using Country Red and a bit of Deep Burgundy on the bottom side under the centers. Pull in the center vein lines with the shading color, pulling the center ones past the petal into the center under the green dots, Highlighting: Your highlights should get lighter on the front petals, less on the second row, and even less ‘on the back row. Tinting: Adding a small amount of color to an area, This can be done with the glazing medium or water, It adds interest to your work. Double load: Sideload each side of the brush with a different color and work back and forth on the palette until the colors are blended, then apply This will make your floats very soft. Brush mixing: Picking up different colors with the brush and blending in your brush by mixing it on the palette. Back to back float: Float the color where you pant the strongest color, flip the brush and float the color down the other side. Supplies: Weathered Wood. Prep: Basecoat the inside panels with Country Blue, Paint the green area around the panels with Lt Buttermilk, dry and apply Neathered Nood and when dry apply Arbor Green over that area. The top shelf and edges of the back piece are painted Country Red with Antique Gold dryorushed over It sparingly. The brackets that support the shelf are painted with a mix of Antique Gold and Moon Yellow with some of this dryrushed on the front edge that has been painted Country Red. Inside each panel (the small edging) is painted with the Gold mix and Country Red drybrushed over this, hitting mostly on the edges, Clouds: Paint using a sideload of White in a loose manner, placing some clouds behind the weathervanes and starting them, you may go back later and add more to them if needed. using a dryprush and adding more to the puffs and as the brush gets dryer rubbing over some of the background, It is a good idea to work on each one of the weathervanes and then go back and add to each one after looking and comparing them to each other. Judge If you need more light or dark areas, Until you get a nice balance, You may add to the clouds as well as the weathervanes. Weathervane on left side: Basecoat with weathervane with Country Red. Leave the comb, wattle, and arrow portion a darker red, highlighting with Antique Gold. Dryorush rooster first with Antique Gold and a bit of Arbor Green on the darker areas. Bulld the highlights with Moon Yellow and then Lt Buttermilk, dryorushing on the lighter areas. The lighter areas are the center of the neck, the body portion of the chicken and the top of the large tall feathers. This doesn't have to be exact, Just work on it until it looks good to you. Eye Is Black with White dot. The beak Is Moon Yellow, shaded with Burnt Umber. Center weathervene: Basecoat the rooster with Lt Buttermilk and the bottom pole is painted Black with White highlights dryrushed on. The sections of the rooster are joined with rivets and need to be shaded under the neck, the tail, and the wing portion with Burnt umber. Add shading to the bottom of the rooster down the pole area. Paint the comb, wattle and a few feathers with Country Red Adda few feathers with Arbor Green, Antique Gold, and Orange (any orange will do). Paint the rivets and the eyes using Black dete, Add a White highlight to the eye. The beak is Moon ‘Yellow, shaded with Burnt Umber. Weathervane on Right: Basecoat with Lt Buttermilk, even under the red to make It brighter. Paint the red areas with Country Red, add the red stripes, comb, and wattle, Shade with Burnt Umber, even on the red areas, The beak Is Moon Yellow, shaded with Burnt Umber. Eye Is Black with Nhite dot. The arrow and the bottom portion is basecoated with moon Yellow, shaded with Antique Gold, then Burnt Umber ana Highlighted with Lt Buttermilk. The center pole ie darker, more Burnt umber shading and outlined with Black. Put a copy of the pattern under the screen. Paint the chicken White, Just brushing across the screen with the brush. Do this 2 times. The head is Country Red, the eye Black, the beak and the tail are Marigold. The straw under the chicken Is Raw Sienna, Marigold and Yellow Ochre. ‘The flowers on the border are made with an EZ Dotz,a stylus or the end of your brush. The center dot is Yellow Ochre and there are 5 Country Red dots around the center one, Paint a thin line between the flowers with Yellow Ochre and add 2 little cross lines. That's alll MN . J a WN? SY SCA AA AD = Ss 10 SUNFLOWER CANISTERS Surface: These were an old set of aluminum canisters, They can be found at tag sales, garage sales, or antique stores usually for under $50. You may find new canisters to use also. | think square ones would work also and you could Just wrap the sunflowers around the corners, The patterns can be adjusted and you can fill in the back of the canisters with sunflowers. If you need a pattern, Just trace off some of the flowers or cut them from the patterns and fill In with them, American Decoart palette: Country Red, Moon Yellow, Marigold, True Ochre, Honey Brown, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Bittersweet Chocolate, Deep Teal, Hauser Lt Green, Hauser Med Green, Hauser Dark Green, Lt Buttermilk, Buttermilk, Black, ‘Yellow Light Leew-cornell Brushes: #1 Script Liner, #0 Liner, 1/4" or 1/2" Stipplers, #6,8, 412 Shaders Mise. You can speed this process up by putting It in the oven cna low temperature. It Is not necessary to draw on all the petals on the flowers. If youneed to, you could draw a line down the middle s0 you would know the direction to place them. They look more natural if you can paint them with a stroke. Sponge lightly with True Ochre all over the canister but more around where the chicken will be and keeping the rest very feint. FLOWERS: Centers are stippled in using a small stippler and you don't have to clean the brush between the colors, You will start with the darker colors and as you go lighter, remember to paint a smaller area, not covering all of the darker color, Sunflowers have Burnt Umber centers stippled, then pick up Burnt Sienna, then Honey Brown, working in the lighter areas around the dark center, then pick up a touch of True Ochre, then maybe even a tish of Marigold or Moon.
