These techniques make the projects easier for the beginner, faster and more enjoyable for the advanced painter. They are the Sante techniques taught in my classes, and Iam always pleased with the way she stutents are at ease with them, even if they have never touched a brush before. All of the scenes in this book will work well on many different swrfaces. Be imaginative! They can decorate ‘other pieces of furniture, kitchen cupboards, ald milk cans or almost anything else you can think of What a neat way to fix something with your own personal touch! Ifyou can accomplish the same look in a way that is easier for you, go for it! That is the beauty of decorative painting, everybody develops their own style! Preparing the Surfaces: [love to wark with old furniture pieces I find at flea markets, auctions, ete, It 4s £0 interesting to transform them into treasures! ‘Unfortunately, most of the wood finishes aren't in very good shape. I sand off as much of the old paint or vamish as possible, Spray on two coats of Krylon Primer then base with at least two coats of nerylic paint. Ifswworking with a new unfinished piece of wood, I don’t use anything on it before painting. The basecoat will be preparation enough. ‘With metal, sand off all rust and dirt, Spray on #wo coats of Krylon Primer onto metal before painting. Crockery and blue jars will need to be washed thoroughly in warm soapy water. Otherwise, the Krylon Spray Paint I use for the sky will act as a basecost. Crackle Finishes: Quite a few of the furniture picces in this book have been done with DecoArt’s ‘Weathered Wood Crackling Medium. It is fun to do and fits right in with the country look that is so popu- lar right now ‘With a large flat brush apply at least two even ‘coats of your base color When dry, apply a heavy coat of the Crackle Medium, allowing this to dry 20-601 minutes. (I usually set a timer for 30 minutes, but drying time will depend on temperature, humidity, ete.) You can dry it with a blav dryer if you want to speed up the process, ‘When the crackle is dry apply a heavy topcoat of acrylic paint color, Brush crackle in one direction, ‘being careful not to brush over where you have already been or it will “remove” the paint. This will be easier if you pick up enough paint on your large brush so that you can get all the way across the surface with one stroke. ‘The heavier the crackle and topcoat are applied the wider the-cracks will become! Let the piece dry thoroughly before you do any decorative painting on it! Preparing to Paint the Scene* Please rexel Before you print. Sky: Most of my skies are put in with spray paint 1 do prefer the satin colors if I can get them, It's fast, easy and makes a great base when working with slick surfaces! I recommend Krylon Spray Paint brand, the colors are wonderful, and there is not as much “over- spray’. This is important when you are trying to con- tain your sky inside a small area. Tuse at least twa different colors, and sometimes three. Your sky should have a graduation of color from darker at the top to a lighter shade as you get to the horizon. Start by spraying the darkest (blue) color in a small circular motion toward the top half of your painting surface. Spray in your second (or lighter) color toward the bottom half of the blue. A third shade may be used if you wish. ‘The “trick” to this is to be able to get your colors up far enough on the painting surface, so when you put your tree line in, you will still see all of the colors in between the trees! Practice on cardboard or a brown paper bag before spraying onto project. Pattern Placement: Trace the line drawing off from the book onto your tracing paper with a pencil. Center tracing on your painting surface, being careful not to cover all the colors in your sky Trace on the trees and horizon line frst with the transfer paper using a stylus. These will be painted in before tracing on the rest of the pattern, ‘Trace on the structures, paths, fences, etc, (over the painted in trees) with white transfer paper (use black transfer paper if doing a snow scene,) ‘Trees: All trees (with the exception of the pines) are put in with a sponge. I prefer using a two inch foam pillow form to sponge with, which can be bought at any sewing center The texture ofa pillow form is perfect. ‘Tear off a piece from pillow form about two inch- es in width and roll it up to form a loose ball. Pick up paint, (base color, the darkest for depth}, and pat in tree line working from horizon up. Be carefal not to make trees too uniform, vary the size and shapes. Either pick up a new piece of sponge, (or pat out all of the base color on a paper towel), before picking up the next color, Load highlight color on the top half ‘of the sponge. Pat in “arcs” of color toward tops of trees working down, [fit blends together too much pick up more highlight color and repeat the process. ‘(Gee Worksheet) Pine Trees: Pine trees are put on with the 10/0 liner and an old worn flat brush ar a deerfoot stipples use the liner to form the top, picking up the old flat brush or stippler and stippling in the rest of the tree. Shrubbery and Flowers: These are stippled in with a wor #2 or #4 flat shader brush. Ifyou don’t have aswom brush, use a 1/8" deerfoot stipplez “Stipple” by picking up color and “pouncing” on a heavy coat of paint, varying the size and shape of the foliage, For flawers wash out the brush and double load for flowers. Pick up the bright color frst with brush and then tip brush in white. Pat a couple of times on the palette to blend the colors. I have found that a. #2 or dd shader after it has worn out works best for stippling. Baseeoating: With a flat brush pick up the color and brush on one or two smooth, even coats of paint. Keep brush strokes going with the contour of the structure, All buildings should show a good contrast between the “light” side and “shaded side”. The size ‘of brush will depend on the size of structure you are painting. Use whatever brush size you are mast com- fortable with, but keep in mind, the larger the brush, ‘the faster you will cover more area, (See Structures on Worksheet) Strealaing: This is done to give the building a “weathered” or “board” look. Using a rake brush (or color comb) or your flat brush, pick up a very small amount of paint, brush once or twice on your palette first, and gently “streak” on the color in a “hit and miss” fashion. A rake brush works great because it does this automatically! Shading: Shading is used under a roof line (eaves) to give the illusion of a shadow. Use a small flat brush picking up 2 very thin wash of Black paint Put a stroke or two on your palette to pull most of ‘the paint out of the brush. Very gently pull this down ‘under the eave, roofline, or any place you need to cast a shadow. Detail Linework: All detail work, framing win dows, outlining, windmills, ete, are done with a 10/0 liner brash. When doing any linework, thin your paint enough that it will flow like ink. [Fyou roll the tip of the brush in paint it will make a finer line, The longer and faster you can make your line, the steaighter it will become! Paths: Scrub in paths starting at the top and working down using a flat brush. Keep the strokes choppy and uneven to give the appearance of dirt Edges of path should be darker than middle of path “Th make it recede to the background, make it larger at the bottom 2s it comes toward you. It also 4 helps if you curve it just a bit. Work from left to right, keeping your brushstrokes moving horizontally. If you ‘work the paint too much it will blend together more than it should and make the path too “smooth” look- ing. Keep the brush strokes loose and choppy. (See instructions on Worksheet.) Using the Fan Brush for Grass: Lay in the grass with the indicated color using a fan brush, Dampen your fan brush alittle, pick up color and “pat” in starting at the top, working down, Wipe out the brush and pick up the highlight color. Pat this in toward the “tops” of the slopes, blending dawn. Work in a “typewriter” motion from left-to right and down. Pat until the colors blend together nicely; you do not want to see a definite line where one color stops and the other starts! *Finishes* Crockery and Blue Jars: The crockery and bine jars in this book are finished with Aristocrat high gloss liquid finish that you can find in your local hobby stores. ‘The kit includes a resin and hardener that you will mix together in equal parts. Lay the crock or jar down, painting side face up, and pour some of the mixture on (about the size of 2 quarter). With an old brush spread it over the painted area evenly It will have many tiny bubbles on the sur- face. To break these, hold a small household propane torch a few inches from the painting and move it back and forth over the surface. (Small propane torch~ 6 are available in the hardware sections of your local store and are relatively inexpensive.) It will only take a few seconds and you will see the bubbles breaking. This will give you a beautiful clear finish! Leave it set- ting like this for 24 hours until it completely hardens. For the first 30 minutes or so, until it tacks up, you may want to check your piece and wipe any drips that may occur. This is a little more trouble than 2 spray finish but is much more durable and com- pletely washable. Furniture: The furniture in the book has been finished with DecoArt Americana Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher. It comes in either gloss or matte finish. Garden Signs: Garden signs have DecoAn's Patio Paint Clear Coat over them for weatherproofing and fade resistance Lantern: Glass pieces that would not be immersed in water such as the lantern are sprayed with DecoArt Americana Spray Sealer/Finisher.
