Coherent structures: It is the region of concentrated

vorticities

Motivations for studies of coherent structures:

Mechanism of Elemental structures of flow
Identify structures of flow and modify them for drag reduction
and control of heat transfer over a surface
To explain flow patterns

Coherent structures in boundary layer are categorized in

following types:
Low speed streaks:
oStreaks are defined as low speed regions as their stream wise velocity
is about half of local mean.
oGenerally they are present in region having Y+ range 0 to 10.

Ejections:
oAs fluid moves down stream, streak moves slowly away from the wall
but at some point it turns and lift away from the wall very fast, hence
this process is referred as ejection or streak lifting.

Sweeps:
Region of high speed fluid moving toward the wall called as sweeps

Vortical structures:
In the near wall region (y+ <100),because of streaks and ejections we
have counter rotating stream wise vortices which are identified as
vertical structures.

Fig 2:counter-rotating rolls in near wall

region

Backs: These are surfaces along which stream wise velocity changes
abruptly

Hairpin vortex: These are vertical structure away from of the

wall, having cross stream dimension scale of v.

Where v=Kinematic viscosity/Wall shear stress

With increase of Reynolds number they will extremely elongated.
