NUTRIA
ALSO KNOWN AS COYPU OR SWAMP BEAVER
Characteristics:

The Nutria is known for being a large (1.7 ft long, 14 lbs) dark colored rodent.
The Nutria can commonly be mistaken as a beaver or muskrat when swimming, but can be distinguished
by their white patched muzzle, webbed hind feet, large rat like tail, and yellow incisors (teeth).

Origin
The Nutria was originally only native to Southern
South America until the late 1800s. The nasty
rodent is commonly found near the coast line or in
marshy/swampy areas, and is never found far from
water.

Suspected Hideouts
The Nutria is found most commonly in marshy,
semiaquatic areas. Other common areas include
freshwater ponds and impoundments, drainage
canals, rivers, and swamps. The Nutria have been
known to adapt to a wide variety of habitats and
can live in almost any semi-aquatic environment.

Crimes Committed
1. Destroyed over 7,000 acres of land in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.
2. Eliminated sediment and nutrient filtration in numerous amounts of aquatic
environments across the world.
3. Destroyed numerous amounts of young aquatic life nurseries across the world.
4. Reproduced beyond reasonable limits.
5. Eaten other species food source (aquatic plants).

6. Broken into farms and stolen food.

7. Exhibited aggressive behaviour towards humans and pets.

Methods to kill
Trapping: The most common way (and easiest) way to trap Nutria is to use a one/two door trap.
Inside the cage put live bait, and for greater success create a small trail of consumables.
Shooting: Hunting the Nutria with firearms is another common way of killing these pesky
rodents. Nutria can often be find near a bait station or in their natural habitat. For this method of
killing make sure you have your permits.
Toxicants: The only toxicant registered toxicant for killing Nutria is Zinc Phosphide. This is a
commonly used toxicant and poses little to no threat to the surrounding environment. Be warned,
proper registration and licensing is required.
