Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing to express my desire to become an English teacher in your school. I am a recent

graduate of Loras College and have focused in Creative Writing and English Literature.
I have many different gifts that I can bring to your school through teaching. I have most recently
had my student teaching experience in a co-taught English Language Arts classroom at Eleanor
Roosevelt Middle School in Dubuque, Iowa. During my time here I have integrated technology
into my lessons successfully, created engaging lessons plans, including an entire unit plan over
The Outsiders, and built rapport with students by showing genuine interest. In addition, I have
actively participated in house meetings, parent teacher-conferences and individualized education
plan meetings. These experiences have given me the insight and strength to become a better team
player.
In addition to what I have learned in the classroom I have been involved in a number of ways on
campus. My experience in school has been heavily influenced by my participation in sports. I
have run cross country team and track & field team all four years in college. I have learned to be
patient and how to persevere through tough times. Thus, the sport has given me the tools to have
strong work ethic on the course and in the classroom. Furthermore, I have worked in interfaith
work creating a safe, positive environment to appreciate differences and foster discussion. This
mindset of discussing issues and misperceptions in society and amongst religions was important
for me to acknowledge. This experience has helped me recognize the differences I will have
among my students and that I am willing to take time to understand my students and appreciate
these differences. Another way I have grown is through my creative writing courses, mainly
through writing poetry. Initially, I was apprehensive to take part in creative writing, but I learned
to appreciate this type of artwork. In my poetry classes we workshopped different students work
and I welcomed different types of thinking to better myself. I can see how this will help me as a
teacher because it has allowed me to see different ways students minds can work. Thus, I have
grown to value the different skills and mindsets of my students and welcome all types of
thinking. All of these lessons have strengthened my ability to be a successful teacher in the
classroom.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your consideration
Yours truly,
Michael J. Uhl
