We spent many classes discussing how to assess a

maternity patient, and get all the appropriate information
from them in order to provide knowledgeable, and
competent care. Specifically in class we discussed about
what information is important to obtain during the first
visits to the doctor in regards to the pregnancy. Gathering
information regarding health history that could have
effects on the pregnancy, or the fetus. I learnt that this is
extremely important as the earlier that things can be
screened and monitored is important in ensuring safety
for the mother and the fetus, as well as planning how to
care for the baby once it has arrived.

In this competency I would rate myself as fair. Having

only ever worked with one maternity patient I cannot
comfortably say that I am good or excellent, as I did not
have to apply this knowledge in caring for my patient. We
have spent a fair amount of time in lectures discussing
how to assess a maternity patient, and how to properly
examine them and the development of the fetus. I feel
that I understand the concepts that have been presented
in lectures, and would be able to provide such care,
however until I have more practice in the clinical setting I
would not rate myself as any higher
In the future when I have maternity patients I now know
how important it is to gather all the information regarding
their health history, and monitor for any abnormalities.
Having been in these lectures and gathering knowledge
about how to care for a maternity patient I feel more
comfortable caring for a maternal patient, and monitoring
their development throughout the pregnancy. In the
future I will know what kinds of questions to ask, and how
to ensure that my client is comfortable confiding in me
with information that they may otherwise not want to
share. This way I will best be able to provide each one of
my patients with appropriate care to each individual
situation.
