Introduction to the Lesson/Hook:

Allotted time: 10 minutes

Good afternoon class! I would like you all to log on to Quizlet.com and study your terms for the first five minutes of
class. You can play scatter or gravity if you would like. I am setting the timer for five minutes now. If you forgot your
Quizlet password or username I have the master list at my desk. Give the students five minutes on Quizlet.com. Alright
class, I would like you to close Quizlet.com now. Can anyone tell me what the definition of lifestyle is? Wait for student
response. Thank you ___________. That is correct. Well today we are going to be starting a project that allows you to
choose the kind of lifestyle you would like to have in the future. You are going to answer a series of questions on what
type of lifestyle you wish to have, then we will look at what salary you will need to support this lifestyle.

Learning activities/procedures:

Allotted time:

Now lets go to this website and get a reality check! Google Real-life Arkansas. I am
showing you on the projector where to go so you can follow along. The website name is rather
long so this will be quicker. Now is everyone there? If not, raise your hand or turn to your
neighbor to see if they can help.
The first thing I would like you to do is click on the number 1 Reality Check box. This next
page is where we can choose where we want to live. Now, I understand that some of you have
dreams of living outside of Arkansas. For the sake of this assignment, lets say you will be living
in Arkansas. Now choose a town you would like to live in. If the town you would like to live in
isnt there choose the town closest to that town.
Notice how when you move your mouse over each one of these boxes. A description of this
choice will appear. Take your time when you move through this reality check assessment. At the
end, it will show you your required salary to fit the lifestyle you have chosen. Then you will be
able to choose between the jobs that offer that salary. There will be a tricky section when it
comes to Health Insurance. On the Health Insurance question you may choose the Health
Insurance I or II, or you may choose to pay each visit.
What I would like you all to do is complete this worksheet I am passing out after you are
finished with the quiz. There will be a total expenses summary page at the end of the reality
check activity. If you get to the end and you realize you have chosen a lifestyle that is too
expensive you may go back and change some of your preferences. After you have recorded all
of your expenses move on to the next page.
The Careers page is next. You may choose your education level and the occupation cluster you
wish to go into. After you move on to this page you will be able to choose from this list of careers
to fit your lifestyle. This is where you will complete the second part of the worksheet. I would
like you to research 3 careers that have a salary to fit your chosen lifestyle.

Closure/Review of Content:

Allotted time: 5-7 minutes

I would like you all to pull up socrative.com and answer this question as an exit slip. Last week,
you all chose one career to research. I would like to know if your career that you researched was
one of your three options to support your chosen lifestyle. If not, tell me what the salary of the
other job was and what your lifestyle would require of you.

Evaluation/assessment of student learning:

Allotted time:

I will formally assess my students knowledge of the terms given on Quizlet.com. Quizlet tracks
the students learning of terms and give accuracy reports to show what terms they are struggling
with.
I will informally assess the students ability to research by observing them as I walk around the
room.
My socrative.com exit slip will assess the students learning of how their original chosen career
may differ from what is realistic to support their lifestyle.
Modifications for exceptional learners:
I have strategically placed my gifted students near students that may need additional help during class.
I have two students with learning disabilities. For these students, I will give them a page of notes that go along with my
lesson. I will also assist them with the writing portions of the worksheets they will be given today.
