English 219-004
Homepage Reflection
I have learned a great deal in English 219 including how to draft
professional documents, curating an editing eye, learning new means of
communication, and how to better collaborate with others. Collectively, all of
these experiences have have made me a better writer and a more
competent competitor within the twenty-first century workforce population,
especially in this age of technology. Specifically, I would like to reflect on the
following experiences:
1. Analytical Report. Drafting the analytical report was my first
introduction in drafting professional, workplace, documents. I learned
how to draft a cover letter and a flexible report format, IMRaD, that can
be translated into research and analytical reports that I am sure I will
write in the future, not only as a student, but as a professional.
Working on project 1, I also learned how to work collaboratively with a
team. I experienced delegating work and holding team members, as
well as myself, responsible for the work needed to meet a deadline.
This was also my first experience working with a rubric that did not
specify technical details like font size, type, and spacing. These details
do not matter, I realize now, as much as the quality of the content. But,
not having these details explicitly did provoke me to make aesthetic
decisions that were appropriate for the audience, purpose, and genre
that I am writing in.
2. Proposal. Writing the proposal was also an experience that I am
grateful for. It is a genre that, now introduced to, I am sure I will use in
the workforce and in academia. I have already started utilizing what I
have learned by writing a proposal by helping a friend draft a proposal
for her start up that will eventually be read by potential investors. This
project was also the most multi-modal project for me. I produced a
podcast, which is a medium I have not worked with before, and so I
feel more comfortable using different mediums to communicate my
work. I also feel more likely to use different mediums to produce my
work for future class projects, if the opportunity exists.
3. Professional Development & Weekly Assignments. I appreciated
the grammar workshops, they have made me a more conscious writer
and introduced me to resources I will be using to check my work, like
Purdue OWL. The most exciting Weekly Assignment was drafting a
resume and having a professional in my field make suggestions that
were specific to my intended industry. The resume I used for this
Weekly Assignment is the resume I will be using in the workforce. I am
also currently working on making my resume multimodal to better
showcase my display work, which is a suggestion that was made by
the professional who looked over my resume. I am more comfortable
adding multimodal components to my resume because of the new

mediums I have learned to use in class, like audio and video, and I
think this will set me apart from other applicants joining the current
technological workforce.
4. Portfolio Website. I had never made a website before and learning to
do so has been a great experience. To reference the statement, I made
before about making a multimodal resume and portfolio, building a
website for the final English 219 portfolio is what has given me
confidence to make a website of my own to showcase my work and
experience, while incorporating multimodal components, of course. I
am also more likely now to use a website as a medium to showcase
work in any future courses.
