One significate learning experience related to the

CPLN competency is the ability and demonstrate
knowledge to identify suspicion and or sign of
physical, sexual, mental abuse of child and it is
mandatory for me to report and document. As a nurse it
is important to know all the signs of physical, mental
and sexual abuse. It will be the nurse duty to assist the
victim and help with any traumatic experience. And as
well document and report my finding as per Agency
policy to better resolve the issue. A nurse should know
what signs to look for in a child abuse and act in a
professional manner in order to provide safe adequate
care to the child. For example, if a 5-year client has
virginal discharge and vaginal tears. This can be good
indication of sexual abuse. It will be the nurse
responsibility to report, document and identify if the
client has been sexually abuse. The nurse can identify
this either by asking the child simple question about
her environment or if she likes to play with dolls
observe how the client is playing with the dolls. This
could be a good indication If she is being sexually
abuse.

As a nursing student, throughout this term I have

learned what assessment to perfume related to child
abuse. With this assessments, I am able to identify,
report and document any finding that is related to child
abuse.
For example: Physical Abuse included unusual
bruising, burn marks, bite marks, fractures, evidence of
previous healed injuries.
Emotional Abuse: shy or introverted child, aggressive
or angry child, does not respond to affection,
inappropriate parent/child interaction.
Sexual Abuse: vaginal tears, unexpected STIs, vaginal
discharge, anal itching or injuries, inappropriate sexual
behavior/knowledge.

Proficiency category: Fair

I rated myself fear in the proficiency categories
because I attended classes, made class noted, read the
nursing textbook and read the PowerPoint for the
lecture before and after class. I rate myself fear due to
the knowledge I have gain in NFDN 2005.

PRACTICE

I will apply this learning in my current and future

nursing practice when I assess, care and teach my
client on their abuse.
For my current life, I will apply this knowledge
towards the children I look after as babysitting. As well
use this practice towards assessing and teaching my
family and anyone I interact on the signs of physical,
mental and sexual abuse.
With this learning experience in the future, I will be
able to provide safe care base on my finding I have
gain on child abuse and as well provided better nursing
interventions that will help the clients.
