Lesson Plan: Science Experiment-Water Cycle- Phases of Matter
1. Rationale: As students are getting familiar with the water cycle, it is a great time to
explain different phases of matter by making a connection to how water works.
2. Big Idea: Observable patterns and cycles occur in the local sky and landscape.
a. Curricular Competencies: Demonstrate curiosity and a sense of wonder about
the world
b. Content: Local patterns in events that occur on Earth and in the sky.
3. Learning Intention: I can explain different properties of matter: solid, liquid, and
gases.
4. Assessment:
- Throughout the lesson I will be using formative assessment to see if the students
are grasping the concept.
- Monitor through the classroom during Ice Melting activity and ask what they are
doing and ask whats happening to the ice.
5. Resources, Material and Preparation: Melt-an-ice cube activity sheet, video clip,
projector, laptop, salt, ice, water, containers, dice, and paper towels.
6. Lesson Development

Introduction: How will you introduce this lesson in a manner that

engages students and activates their thinking?
- Gather students to the carpet and tell the

scientists for the day. Have a student read the intention aloud and give a
2 min
brief summary of what they will be doing today during the lesson.
Show YouTube video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

- before showing the video:
o Give a brief explanation of the clip
o tell students to try to remember the three states of

matter
- After the video:
o ask students: Tell a friend whos sitting next to you
the different phases of matter

Teaching/Learning Sequence: What steps and activities are you

going to use to help students acquire and practice the knowledge,
skills and/or attitudes needed to meet the outcome?
- Write down Solid, Liquid, Gas on the white board. Explain each state
using an ice cube as an example.
Solid: - Hold the ice cube and draw whats happening to the particles
within the ice cube on the board
Liquid: - Give a rub to the ice cube and ask whats happening as we
are warming up the ice. Tell them that the particles are moving faster
because of the increase of temperature. Draw the particles on the
board

Gases: - Ask what happens to puddles on a very sunny day. Draw the
gas particles on the board

o At this point we will pretend we are particles and act out each of
the states of matter. I will remind the students to only walk in the
classroom.

Explain Each station.
Go over the rules.
Tell the students to remember that they are scientists and scientists
are very careful to do their experiments correctly. For this
experiment please use the ice appropriately, do not throw it or do
anything that is not on the worksheet so the experiment goes
correctly.

o Teacher pairs up students and send them off to do the experiment.

o During the activity, circulate through classroom and ask them what
they think is happening with their ice, why is it melting?

Closure: How will you solidify the learning that has taken place
and deepen the learning process?
Students will be asked to tidy their area by cleaning up the melted ice
