VP takes ita few steps further with the Tiger I Update and the Zimmerit package for the Tiger 1 E. Although it is tempting to twist and bend the hell out of the metal side skirts, it is best to show restraint because will look more convincing and believable this way. Note the various finely photoetched hull fittings, which will pay off after careful painting and weathering. ‘The VP Zimmerit package for the Tiger 1 E makes adding zimmerit to the Tamiya kit fast and easy. It can even take custom battle damage. Left : Some of the rear hull details are visible here. Note how the exhaust shrouds have been dented to simulate the thin sheet metal of the originals. This photo shows the initial oil wash. Some of the delicate parts, such as machine-gun and hatches, have been removed unt final assembly to protect from loss or damage. Here we see the model after the first pass of drybrushing. In order to ben- efit fully from the weathering rocess, the model must go through several phases of local washes and drybrushing, with enough time allowed for drying in between. A further phase of weathering. Note how the contrast between shadows and highlights deepens, further enriching the overall coloring of the model. The finished piece. This model represents a classic approach to weathering. It shows evidence of heavy wear, and at the same time reveals subtle streaking caused by rain and wind. It looks both dirty and sun bleached at the same time, Although this tank is overall sand in color, it is anything but dull or boring. The shadows and highlights, combined with the variation in coloring caused by weathering, stich as rust, bring out a whole spectrum of col The lines of this tank, combined with the various textures ‘created by the zimmerit, force a tremendous con- trast beiween shadows and lights. Note how the chain hanging from the tow hooks helps to convey the shear brute heaviness of this monster, This view gives a clear idea of how to vary the different weathering sub- tleties. More dirt and grime are on the engine deck, with fuel and oil spills, and more wind blown dirt and dust around the engine intakes. The broad, open areas of the roof are more faded, while dirt and rust streaks down the sides. This view shows how effective weathering can be for wear and tear. Note how the dents and holes appear to be much more three- dimensional than before weathering. The engine deck area in focus. Although this area is relatively flat, this view demonstrates a great deal of depth, from the screens and grills of the intakes to the worn and chipped paint on the edges. They could also be with other figure parts. Here, the three subassemblies: cab, chassis, and cargo box, and the crew are test fitted prior to painting. ‘The stages of airbrushing are illustrat- ed here. A base coat of Humbrol Matt 66 Olive Drab receives an over spray of a lighter color, Humbrol Matt 150 Forest Green, in a “cloud” pattern. This provides the first level of fading. The chassis, wheels and lower body assemblies ‘received an airbrushed treatment of Humbrol Matt 29 Earth. Lines between paint colors should be soft and gradually blend from one to the other. Stars were airbrushed off- white using VP 1196 and VP 1206 templates. When dry, seal the entire jodel with a matt varnish to protect the paint job from the weathering process. All subassemblies put together to form a completely loaded truck. “Attention to detail is important to creating realism. Note the “clean glass” where the wipers have hit the wind. shield. ‘These were masked and lightly airbrushed an earth color. The winch cable and chain are carefully draped on the front bumper. The tow cable and chain (VP 619 and 620) are painted black and drubrushed with the silver/raw umber mixture. The inside of the headlights received a coat of off-white before installing the clear lenses, Note the fuel stains around the fuel filler cap, and the “met- alized” and chipped pai The crew personnel gear and the carefully placed load in the cargo box give a lived-in look to the truck. Successive applications of lightened Matte 29 (with white) are added for brighter highlights. Areas with lots of raised detail are particu- larly well suited for drybrushing. Figures were assembled carefully and test fitted cach step of the way to avoid fit troubles later. Parts are temporarily tacked with a small amount of glue in case they need to be removed. When dry, a wash of thinned Matte Black and Burnt Sienna was applied and dabbed off leaving small amounts of dark wash in recessed areas which toned down the mono-tone open areas. Above: The figures are placed and secured. With a four ‘man crew and a full complement of accessories, there isn't much wasted space. Patience and test fitting paid off well for this detailed and compact little vehicle. Right: After the base areas are weathered, seats and canvas covers, as well as other details, are painted and weathered similarly Left: A wash of Dark Earth was added to the tires for a well worn look. Lightened and well-thinned panzer grey was sprayed on the centers of open areas in what's called ‘cloud pat- tern’. Dark earth was sprayed around the lower sections and floorboards of the vehicle for road dust. The canvas roof was sprayed with olive drab. Strips of plastic and resin are used as holders for paint- ing. The chassis got a coat of Testors dark earth with a touch of Testors Burnt Umber. The radios and table were given the same treatment : basecoat and cloud pat- tern. The doors where left tacked in place. Just like ships have a ‘waterline’, vehicles have a ‘dirt-line’, thinned darkearth gives the vehicle a road weary look. Dark earth was sprayed around the lower sections to simulate road dust and mud. Mixing Raw Umber, Matte Black (enamel), and Burnt Sienna, a wash was applied a small section at a time and dabbed away with a soft cloth. This process was repeat- ed over again until the whole vehicle was done. A soft brush was used for tight areas and corners. The chassis was washed in the same manner. Heavier mixes with more black were added to greasy areas like the oil pan, gearboxes and dif- ferential, Smaller components were also washed. After al plete, various delicate hull details can be added, such as the VP Tow Chain, The numbers on the turret were care- fully airbrushed through the VP template for German WWII AFVs. The overall paint scheme represents a street fighting camouflage scheme utilized toward the end of the war, when much of the fighting was done on the defensive w 1s of German cities. The engine deck covers after painting and weathering, These can be displayed on the vehicle or removed for service and repair, depending on how the modeler wish- es to present the finished piece. ‘The completed front hull area shows off the benefit of careful weathering on the finely cast VP parts. The zim- merit in particular allows for beautiful execution of washing and drybrushing, no matter what the basic paint scheme is, 45 From above, it is easier to see the general application of chipped paint caused by general service use. Most chipped paint is concentrated on and around high traffic areas, such as hatches and access panels, as well as other moving metal paris. Extra care must be taken to avoid metalizing zimmerit areas, because zimmerit was actually a plaster-like putty applied to the outside of the vehicle. After completion, the rear hull area really comes to life. Here, the engine deck covers have been removed to show off the maximum amount of detail in this area. Note how the fuel and oil spills have been carried over onto the upper hull plate near the turret race. In combat situations in particular, the German tankers were not thinking about losing a few drops of precious fuel, but rather re in a hurry to gas up their beast and return to the relative safety of the armored shell, where they could exploit the brutal abilities of the dreaded Panther, od Hi Although this panther shows no visible signs of batle damage, much evidence exists of general service wear, such as the faded paint and rust streaks. Another area of metalizing is the side skirts, which aside from having a few missing, appear to be scratched and scraped by heavy ground debris. Panther Ausf. G Painting Guide.
