    Thereareapproximately6,800spokenlanguagesaroundtheworldandyetmost
    Americansaremonolingual.Forhundredsofyears,Americanshaveexpectedandreliedonother
    countriestospeakenglish.Forexample,whenthefirstcolonistsarrived,insteadoflearningthe
    nativelanguages,theymadetheNativeslearnenglish.Ifthatisnotthedefinitionoflaziness
    thenIdonotknowwhatis.Thislazinessisduetothefactthatmanyjustdonotcareorhavethe
    urgencytolearnanotherlanguage.InanAmericansociety,thecitizensconsiderthisasanorm
    buttherestoftheworldinfactfrownsuponmonolinguals.Sohowcanwe,asAmericans,ensure
    thatwearenotonlythetopcompetitorsinsports,military,consumerismbutineducationas
    well?Anoptioncouldbethat,educationsystemsshouldincorporateasecondlanguageintothe
    curriculumjustlikemath,science,andenglishrightasachildbeginsschool.Forexample,
    perhapsteachingSpanishsinceabout17%ofallcitizensintheUnitedStatesareHispanic
    surpassing12.3%ofBlacksand5%AsiansbasedonstudydonebyFactank.Bynotteaching
    anotherlanguageatthebeginningofanindividual'sacademiccareer,wearebasically
    underminingthecapabilitiesofthechildren.Inotherwords,ifwedonottrythis,thenwewill
    neverknowthetruecapacitiesofthechildren.Although,anoptionisgiventomiddleschoolerto
    takeasecondlanguagebutstillmanystudentsdonotconsidertheoptionbecausejustliketheir
    ancestors,theydonotconsideritsbenefits.Whenchildrenbeginschool,theyarestillinthe
    preoccupationalstageastagewhereachildisjuststartingtomakesenseoftheirsurroundings
    andtheirbrainisthusgrowingwhichmeansthisistheoptimaltimeforthemtobelearning
    variouslanguagesatonce.Becausethechildrenarestillgoingthroughthestagesofcognitive

    developmentandaccordingtothetheoryCriticalPeriodHypothesis,childrenlearnlanguages
    moreeasilybecauseoftheplasticityofthebrainwhichletsthemusebothofthehemispheresof
    thebrainforlanguageacquisitionbutaswegrowolder,welostthisplasticity,limitingthemto
    useonlythelefthemispheremakingitmoredifficultfortheadultstolearnanotherlanguage

    Learningmultiplelanguagescanactuallyhaveprofoundeffectonthebrainaswell.In
    fact,theMRIsoftwoindividualsonewhoismonolingualandtheotherbilingual,lookquite
    different.Scientificstudieshaveshownthatpeoplewhoarebilingualactuallyhashigherdensity
    ofgreymatterintheirbrainswhichcontainsmostoftheneuronsandthusthesynapsessothe
    morethesynapses,theeasierforthesignalstotravelthroughthesynaptictransductionpathways.

    whyarewenotdoing?Justimaginehowamazingitwouldbetosayonesentencethatcombines
    variouslanguagesatonce!Communicationbarrieramongstsomeemployersandemployees
    woulddeteriorateandopenmoredoorsofopportunitiesformanyintheworkplace.Notonlythat
    butinthelongrun,beingmultilingualcaninfactdelaytheeffectsofAlzheimersdiseaseaswell
    asotherformsofdementia.
