The Work of Art Frinq

Introduction:
The goal of the research project that we conducted was to see how many
people intend on incorporating Art into their careers and does income play a
role in their decision. As the funding for art has decreased immensely over
the last 10 years especially. It is important that we find out who intends on
using art in their careers and identifying the factors leading to their decisions
to give back to the community, in hopes to be able to manipulate those
factors making it possible for the Arts to be supported. We will be asking PSU
student s to participate in our survey, and through the findings of the data
we are hoping to better understand why the funding for the arts is so low.
Discussion:
The data that we retrieved showed that there is no correlation between
income level and the planning to incorporate art in to their careers. This
evidence does not support our hypothesis. We found that lower income level
individuals are intending to incorporate art into their careers then higher
income level individuals
. With such a small sample size consisting of 33 PSU undergrad and graduate
students and conducting a Cross-Sectional study the data that we have may
or may not support our hypothesis. This is a limitation because this does
show us consistent data over time like a longitudinal survey would.

With an overall sample size of 42 college students enrolled in courses at

Portland State University. Of the 42 participants, 14 (19.7) were Male, and 23
(32.4) were female, and 1 (1.4) identified as Transgender, 2 (2.8) preferred
not to say, and 1 (1.4) said other. The youngest participant responded as 18
and the Oldest reported as 31, with a (M= 20.80, SD=3.148). The racial
composition of this sample was as follows: 25 (35.2) reported as Caucasian,
1 (1.4) African American, 3 (4.2) Latino, 3 (4.2) Asian, 7 (9.9) mixed, 1 (1.4)
as other.

Chi-Squared Test of Independence:

A chi-square test of independence was used to evaluate the relationship

between income level and the intention to incorporate art into ones career.
(See figure 1). We found an insignificant relationship between income levels
and their plan to incorporate art into their Careers 2(1, N=33) = .021 value,
P=.88, there were no differences in the intensions to incorporate Art in to
their careers. Whats interesting is that we thought that a higher income
would make people more likely to want to incorporate Art into their careers
but, the chart shows that only 26.3 % of people with a higher income chose
to do so. Whereas people with a lower income 73.7 % chose to incorporate
art into their work. However, an implication to take note of is that the
sample size was a bit too small to have enough explanatory power.
Independent Sample t-test:
An independent-samples t-test was conducted to evaluate the hypothesis
that those with an income above 1000.00 dollars a month would spend more
time using arts. Contrary to this hypothesis, people with an income below
1000.00 a month are more likely to spend time using the arts.(M = 3.56, SD
= 1.236) than group B (M = 3.08, SD = 1.613), t(33) = .79, p = .43.
