opportunityandfallingheadoverheelswhenIbecameaclientmuchlater.

buildingportfoliosandstructuringVC.Therearebetterwaystostructurethe
assetclassthatwillperformbetter.Wearegettingthere,butitwilltakesome
timetoscale.
CF:Whatsthebiggestproblemwithhowventurecapitalistsstructure
theirportfolios?
DM:Mostlyportfolioconstructionistooconcentrated.Theindustrythinksthat
30companiesisproperportfolioconstruction,buttheyareabsolutelywrong.
Justbecausesomeoutliersaresuccessfuldoesnotmeanthattherestofthe
industryisfullofshit.Ifyouincreaseportfoliosizebyfiveto10times,your
portfoliowillperformbetter.Infiveto10yearswewillrealizethatweareright.It
willbetheminorityoffundsthathaveconcentratedportfolios,notthemajority.
Peoplearesayingwearedoingsprayandprayandsaythatiskindoffunnyand
crazy.Itismathematicallyquantitative.Youaretheloserswhoaredoingthenon
mathematicalmodel,buttheyhaven'trealizedityet.
DM:Whatopportunitiesdoesyourinvestmentstrategyopenupfor
you?
CF:Itgivesusalotmoreflexibility.Wepioneeredadifferentmodel.WhenI
startedinvestingasanangelandatFoundersFund,Imadealotoflittlebets.
Mostofthemdidntwork,butsomeofthemworkedreallywell.Wewantedto
scalethatstrategy.Thatgenerallyisworkingverywell.Between2to3%ofour
portfoliowillbecomereallybig,another5to7%willbecomemodestlybig.Itis
basicmath.IfIonlyfindtheunicorns2%ofthetime,theportfolioshouldbea
minimumof50to100companies.Formorestatisticallysignificantresults,the
portfolioshouldhave200to500companies.
CF:Sowhyiseveryonesoobsessedwithventurecapital?
DM:Peoplehaveseensomeprettybigwins.Thosewinsarecapturingmoreand
moreofthevaluechainbynotgoingpublic.Companieswouldgopublicat$200
milliondollars,nowcompaniesat$2billionor$5billionarenotgoingpublic.
Privatemarketsarecapturingallthevaluecreation.Peopletalkaboutcompanies
notgoingpublicastheproblem.Thatisnottheproblem.Pricingistheproblem.
Thosecompaniesarekeptprivatebecauseprivatecapitalisgreedytoinvestin
thosecompaniesandcapturethatvaluecreation.Theywilldefinitelyfigureout
howtopriceitbecausetheywillmakemoney.

DM:Peoplearetryingtocomparerightnowto2000and2001,whichis

absolutelynotwhatishappening.Theyarealsotryingtocompareitto2008and
2009,whichisntreallywhatishappeningeither.Therearepeoplewhoare
pullingbackoncapitaldeployment.Theyaregoingtobemorespecificandstingy
onvaluation,but2008and2009wasntaproblemforcompaniesproducing
interestingproducts.Therewasalackofcapitalaccessandsomecompaniesthat
hadbeenstructuredforgrowthhadtofigureouthowtogetbackonabudget.The
metricschangedtobreakevenandcashflowpositiveasopposedtogrowth.There
wasntaproblemwiththeindustrysapproachtogrowingcompaniesthenand
thereisntaproblemnowexceptthatsomecompaniesweregorgingthemselves
oneasymoneyandtheywontbeabletodietthemselvesquicklyenough.
CF:Yousaidonthepanelthatyouwishedtheeconomywasasbadas
itwasin20082009.Whydidyousaythat?
DM:WestillwouldhavefundedTwiloandCreditKarmaiftheeconomywas
doingwell,buttheywouldhavebeenmorecompetitivedealsattwicetheprice.
Wemightnothavegotteninorgottenourreturnscutinhalfbecauseoftheprice.
Themarketrightnowisnotfallingdownaroundourears.Yes,therearegoingto
besometoughtimesaroundthecornerascompaniestrytoraisemoneyat
valuationsthattheyprobablycantsustain.Therewillbedownroundsandpeople
runningoutofcompanyandbrokenunicorns.Thatispartoftheprocess,thatis
usjustfiguringoutpricing.
CF:Theranosfamouslyhadnobigventurecapitalistbackers.Doyou
thinkthecompanywouldbeinsuchatoughspotifitdid?
DM:PeoplearecriticizingTheranosasaventurecapitalmistakewhenitwasnt.I
cantpredictthepast,butIwouldguessthatwithventurecapitalistsonthedeal,
itwouldnthavebeena$9billionmistakeitwouldhavebeena$90million
mistake.ZenefitsorWeWorkpotentiallyarethingsIammoreworriedaboutthan
Theranos.Theranosinmymindisanoutlierandabadoutlier.Zenefitswasa
companythathasaninterestingbusinessmodel,butgotalittleaheadofitself.
Theyhadtomakeabunchofchanges,buttheystillhaveaninterestingbusiness.
ThequestioniscanSacks[DavidSacks,ZenefitsnewCEO]executethatbusiness
sotheycanraisemoneyatthecurrentvaluationorbetter.
CF:Halfofyourteamisfemaleandnonwhite,andathirdofyour
investmentteamisfemale.Whyisdiversityimportanttoyour

sexist,wearetakingadvantageofinvestinginthoseopportunitiesasmuchaswe
