Waldorf Schooling handout

Waldorf is a non-religious school system that focuses on the body mind and soul of the
student. This school system emphasizes the need to build the whole student by using the head,
hands, and heart (Waldorf Education). During the intermediate years the students are exposed to
creative and imaginative curriculums that require them to use their both their left and right sides
of their brain (Education). These students are are encouraged to sing, draw, paint, socialize and
grow in their own unique ways. At the start of their education they have the students focus on
their creativity and don't start learning how to read till the end of their second grade year
(Waldorf Curriculum). Although there is not a rush to educate the students in the same speed as
public schools, the students are continuously being encouraged in other ways that public school
students don't get.
The first Waldorf School was established in 1919 in Stuggart, Germany by Rudolf Steiner
(Beaven, 2011). The school was founded to provide education to the children who worked in
factories. Steiners main focus was educating the head, hands, and heart of the students. Waldorf
Philosophy says that educating all aspects of the child enables the child to grow into a creative
and productive member of society. Another one of his beliefs was that teachers are the key and
that they need to understand the students development in order to help them grow. It is believed
that children learn best in an open environment where the student and the teacher maintain a

strong bond. To help establish and maintain this student-teacher relationship, students remain
with their teacher for 8 years from age 7 to until they are 15 (Oberski et al., 2007.
With such a creative take on this school system materials may differ from other school
systems but they still incorporate many of the same things. Since Waldorf supports the creative
mind it's no surprise that they use many artistic supplies, such as water colors, yarn and beeswax.
One thing that waldorf does not use that many schools are incorporating in their curriculum is
technology. They try to stray away from that as much as they can (Waldorf Shop).

curriculum. Using such raw materials that engage the head, heart, and hands Steiner develops a
new way of schooling that helps challenge and provoke thought from the students. This article
gives way as to why this educational approach will benefit the child while they are developing
and maturing into the individuals that they are.
