Musical Stations: Lesson 5

Second Grade, University of Illinois Elementary, May 9th 2016, Carson

Satchwell
The musical problem/Objective: Students will be able to work
independently and in groups to solve simple musical problems.
Prior Knowledge: Students have previous experience with using
instruments from each station as a class.
Selection of Repertoire: Ode to Joy, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Materials needed: 4 glockenspiels, 4 iPads, 3 sets of plastic handbells,
4 drums, 4 xylophones/metallophones
Suggested Sequence (in which the teacher makes connections to
prior knowledge and sets up the problem. Students work through the
problem and share their solutions).
Introducing the Lesson: [Set up five station around the room with a
different activity at each] When students get settled in, I will play
explain to them that I want to give them a bit of freedom for the day.
Instead of participating in one activity as a class, you will get to
participate in five different activities with small groups! [Pick groups of
three or four students to head to each station]. When you are at the
glockenspiels, I would like you to play the song that I have written out
for you by matching the colors of the stickers on this page to the colors
of the stickers on the glockenspiels. When you are at the iPads, you
can choose from one of the four apps that I have up on the board.
When you are at the bells, I would like you to arrange them in a line
from the highest sound to the lowest sound. Try not to look at the
numbers at the topuse your ears to put them in order. When you are
at the drums, I would like your group to come up with a cool rhythm
that you can all play and share with the class. When you are at the
xylophones and metallophones, I have set up a piece of paper that
looks just like the one at the glockenspiels with a song that you should
recognize. Once again, you will match the colors of the stickers on the
page to the colors of the stickers on each xylophone. Any questions?
Go!
Developing the Lesson: [Walk around the room to check up on each
station] [Ask glockenspiel players to identify the song on the page
(Twinkle Twinkle)][Assist students with handbells]. Which bell sounds
the highest, and which one sounds the lowest? [Listen to the rhythms
that the drum group creates][Ask xylophone players to identify the
song on the page (Ode to Joy)] Ok, its time to switch! Stations will
switch after 7-8 minutes.

MUS 342 Spring 2016

Closing the Lesson: Drummers, would you like to share your rhythm?
[Ask students to carefully put away their instruments and iPads. Which
was your favorite station? [Take a few students responses] Which
station was the hardest? [Take a few students questions].
Assessments (that relate directly to the understandings students will
gain from the lesson and how they will demonstrate those
understandings):
Are students able to which bells are higher and lower than
others?
Are students able to follow simple graphic notation at the
glockenspiels and xylophones?
Are students able to find comfort in contributing ideas for
rhythms when they begin drumming?
Extensions: More stations, as well as harder stations can be added
easily. It would also be nice to include some time for each group of
drummers to perform their groove for the class.
