Corn Essay Video Assignment:

With your group, you will collaborate to create a

video in which you present your Corn Essay using a
combination of narration, images/photos, notes
written live on a white board as you present, and
PowerPoint slides or similar presentation format to
describe what is happening through the
developmental stages shown in this time-lapse video
showing corn seed germination.

All narration used in the video must be done by
a group member narration in movie clips
found on the internet will not be accepted for
credit toward properly using the words in the
assignments word list.
Corn Essay Background Information
To help you prepare for the corn essay you will
need to read over the following parts of the text,
some diagrams, some text. Also, recall that I pointed
out pages through the fall term that you would want
to make sure to remember, Mader textbook pages
like p 71/232, 121, and 147.
Further, this video clip and images of a germinating
corn seed will be necessary in visualizing the process
you will be asked to write about and narrate in your
video:

You will be describing some topics/concepts we
have not fully discussed in class this year you
will have to learn some things on your own to
include in the video narration and
presentation.

Culminating Essay and Video
Time to put it all together. Use your notes, use your textbook, use online resources.
Water uptake by a corn seed causes the embryo to produce the hormone gibberellin which
is secreted by the embryo, diffusing to the alleurone cell layer inside the seed coat. This
causes the cells of the alleurone layer to produce alpha-amylase which digests the
endosperm starch stores into soluble sugars for use by the growing embryo. Assuming
that gibberellin acts much the same way as the steroid hormone estrogen does in
chickens oviduct cells, but stimulating the production of alpha amylase, write an essay
using the following terms, and any others that apply, to describe the chain of events
starting with the absorption of the gibberellin by the alleurone cells:
To the production of amylase by the alleurone cells,
To the secretion of alpha amylase by the alleurone cells to the starch storage cells of the
seeds endosperm.
To the final destination and uses of the solubilized sugars released by the degraded
starch
Ending with the growth and development of the young corn plant, including the role of
photosynthesis, respiration, and anabolic/synthetic pathways in its growth and
development. The essay ends when you have a fully self-sufficient corn plant seedling.
