FLIPPED

CLASSROOM
101
What students said about
flipped classrooms:
I thought I would hate
the flipped classroom
perspective. But I really
ended up liking it a lot.
The assignments and
group work that we did
in class motivated me to
prepare and do the
readings, which I
normally opt out of in a
lot of lecture classes.

It gave me a better
learning opportunity to
learn from others and
gain knowledge.

I liked the flipped

classroom a lot and feel
that I learn the material
best by doing the
readings on my own and
then doing group work
to reinforce what I read.

ACCOUNTABILITY
Spend time before class reading class

learning. Be tech savvy IN CLASS.

INTERACTION
Interact with your peers and instructors
more. Be interdependent.

and class activities. Be engaged.

A flipped classroom is a student-centered learning environment where instructors play the role of
facilitators and students play the role of active learners. Before coming to class, students need
to study and ask questions they have about the course materials. Instead of covering all the
content, instructors will guide students to deepen their understanding through various learning
opportunities and mini-lectures in class. After class, students practice by doing assignments.
Further discussion with instructors and peers is encouraged throughout the semester.

Myths and Realities about Flipped Classrooms

X FLIP THE WHOLE CLASS.

You DO NOT need to flip the whole class. Flipping a concept

or a topic is good for students to learn in segments.

X FLIPPING CLASS MEANS NO LECTURE.

Students prepare for the class before meeting in

classrooms. Instructors provided guided instruction during class periods with activities,
discussions, mini-lectures, or just-in-time instruction.

X FLIPPED CLASSROOMS ARE ALL ABOUT VIDEOS. Videos are not going to replace the
whole class or instructors. A few notes for using videos in flipped classrooms:
o Integrate short videos with main ideas or concepts.
o Videos can be made by others, instructors, and even your students.
o Video is NOT the only way for direct instruction.

X FLIPPED CLASSROOMS REQUIRE STRONG TECHNOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS.

Instructors might need to learn some new technology tools for course preparation. For
example, how to make instructional videos and upload them to eLC is required. The
staff at CTL will be here to help you. There are many technology tools for instructors to
try for class activities, but it is optional.

X FLIPPED CLASSROOMS ARE ONLINE LEARNING.

Flipping a class means instructors

provide blended learning. Materials in eLC are used for students to prepare and
reinforce their learning at their own pace. Students synthesize their knowledge and
present their understanding in face-to-face class periods.

X FLIPPED CLASSROOMS ARE TIME-CONSUMING.

It can be time-consuming when

instructors make instructional videos or other materials for the first time, but instructors
can use the materials again in following semesters. This will give instructors more time
to work with students during class periods.

MORE INTERACTION, COLLABORATION, AND PARTICIPATION WILL HAPPEN IN FLIPPED

CLASSROOMS. Students are provided with more opportunities to interact with peers
and instructors. Peer instruction can help students understand the content. Instructors
can provide personalized learning in class.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR LEARNING IN FLIPPED CLASSROOMS.

Students
can pace their own learning according to their schedules before class. Individual
work or group work in class helps students be accountable for their own learning.

FLIPPED CLASSROOMS ARE PROVEN TO DEEPEN LEARNING.

Research results show that

meaningful and deep learning happens in flipped classrooms.
