Garrett Farrel, a sophomore at Antelope High School, wrote a letter to the governor about the Syrian refugee crisis. In the letter, Garrett discusses how Syria has been embroiled in a civil war for 5 years that has killed over 11.5% of the population and displaced over 250 million people as refugees. Garrett compares the current Syrian refugee crisis to the Jewish refugee crisis during WWII. Garrett argues that by not accepting Syrian refugees, the U.S. is helping ISIS and risking further radicalization of Muslims who may feel oppressed. Garrett urges the governor to vote to allow Syrian refugees into the U.S., as innocent people should not be punished.

To Whom It May Concern:
"We worry a lot about ISIS traveling overseas from Syria to the United States, but I think one of the greatest fears are those already within the U.S. who are being radicalized and inspired by the ISIS propaganda that's out there on the Internet "(Michael McCaul). My name is Garrett Farrel and I am currently a sophomore at Antelope High School. I have been reading some articles about the crisis in Syria. Lawmakers are currently not allowing refugees to come into the United States and in my opinion that is inhumane to do to people trying to escape a country full of war. For five years now Syria has been in a civil war except the rest of the world has not realized that yet and now Syria is becoming worse. In all 11.5 percent of the country has been killed in the civil war since it erupted back in 2011. The number of injured people is at 1.9 million and life expectancy is down to 70 years old. Since 2011 250 million people have fled Syria for safety. The refugee crisis in Syria today is similar to the world war two refugee crisis. People in WWII were scared that the Nazis would plant agents and spies among the Jewish refugees which is a fear today with Syrian refugees (Associated Press). The United States had also placed strict limits on Jewish people entering the United States during WWII which is also happening today with the Syrians trying to enter the United States (Associated Press). The time periods are almost identical and if something in the United States does not change the Syrian refugees will have the same outcome as the Jewish people. Currently lawmakers are not letting Syrian refugees into the united States and I disagree with what they are doing. By not letting Syrian refugees into the country we are helping Islamic state because the Islamic state wants us to be afraid and fear them and their power (Tribune News Service). Muslims will start to get angry and believe we are going to condemn them and they will join the fight for ISIS because they feel they are being oppressed for being of the Muslim religion. Americans should be fighting back against the Islamic state even if that means taking in some refugees so they will not feel that the United States is oppressing them. All in all Syria is in a major crisis and there are innocent people in the country that have done nothing wrong but are stuck there because every country is scared that they will attack. I would like for the senator to vote to allow Syrians into the country because I feel that people that have done nothing wrong should not be punished in this way. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Garrett Farrel Antelope High School Student Respectful. Responsible. Proud GO TITANS!
