Reed-making notes for Skinner/Hannevold reeds

Assumptions: These steps assume an A440 reed and that one starts with 120mm
gouged, shaped, and profiled cane. On this type of cane, the collar is already made at
30mms. The cane should be shaped with a Fox #2 straight shaper. All measurements are
from the butt toward the tip of the reed.
Mark wires with scribe (6 and 18mms)
Mark score mark at 3mm from edge of tube at collars.
Scrape collar toward 43 mark to make parallel back. back should be .80 to .85 mms.
Mark 43mm and 50mm marks.
sand with 150 wet/dry sandpaper at 43 mark, cane should be .70mm and at 50mm cane
should be .55mm.
6. Beginning at 3mm score mark at the collar, score the length of the tube, then again half way
between original score mark and edge of cane. do this on both sides of each half of the
tube pushing the blade in at the end so the cane actually splits at the butt (shouldnt go into
blade). Do not score cane in the middle.
7. Heat cane in water 30 minutes along with string.
8. Fold cane in half, sideslip bottom to the right. starting at the collar, making only a single
layer, wrap the string around the reed toward the butt end. Make a half hitch knot at the
end.
9. Soak cane with string and mandrel tip for 30 seconds in heated water. Insert mandrel, to
mark. form with pliers to mold the cane to conform to the mandrel. Carefully crimp up to the
2nd wire position but not beyond in order to avoid cracks in the blade.
10. Back the thread until just past the 1st wire (do not undo the hitch).
11. Put on first wire snuggly, but not completely tight at the 6mm position. Remove the mandrel.
12. Insert exacto knife between the reed sides and slice toward the butt from the 1st wire
position to bevel sides so they match, top and bottom. Do this on both sides.
13. Re-insert mandrel.
14. Re-wrap thread on either side of 1st wire.
15. Tighten first wire and form cane around mandrel with pliers.
16. Unwrap thread, just past the 2nd wire mark.
17. Put on 2nd wire.
18. Notch all four sides with triangle file.
19. Remove remaining thread.
20. Cut down tube that protrudes from the sides where the 3rd wire will go.
21. Wrap with thread (Turks head).
22. Cut tip at 27mms from collar.
23. Insert and remove plaque.
24. Put 3rd wire on near 2nd wire, then slide into correct position and tighten.
25. Put on 2 coats of duct cement.
26. ALLOW REED TO DRY 24 HOURS
27. Tighten 2nd and 3rd wires 180 degrees only.
28. Ream so bocal goes on 8mm. May use 3/16 drill bit into, but not past 2nd wire. Then ream
with round file turning counter-clockwise until reed fits on local 8mms.
29. Check 43mm mark for .70 mms and 50mm mark for .55 mms.
30. Sandpaper down center from 50 mark to tip 10 times
31. Sandpaper down 4 sides from 43 mark to tip 10 times each side. (Do not sand behind the 43
marks)

5.

32. Slice 2 tip corners with scalpel or exact knife.

33. File off sideslip and straighten sides up to tip with emery board. Reed should end up 14 1/2
to 15 mms wide.
34. With reed perpendicular to sandpaper, clamp tip and sand so their lengths match.
35. Clean inside of tip with fine sandpaper (eg. 400), shaped like a plaque. Insert sandpaper,
then plaque, then remove both to smooth inside of reed.
