Hojati, Alireza. A Study of Euphemisms in the Context of English-Speaking Media.

International Journal of Linguistics, 4.4 (2012): 552-562. Print.
Hojatis work looks at how euphemisms are used in the media during wartime as a way to
manipulate the news and deceive viewers into believing information that might not be true. I
found this article on Google before locating it in the Oviatt Library. I used the key terms
language euphemism and war to find this source. I determined that the source was
appropriate by looking at the journal that it was from and the works cited page. I am going to
use this source in my paper to show how the media uses euphemisms to make language unclear
and try to trick viewers.
Ryabova, Marina. "Euphemisms and Media Framing." European Scientific Journal, 9.32 (2013):
33. Print.
Ryabova discusses how euphemisms are used in the media to frame certain events and make
them look better or worse than they really are. Euphemisms also help governments spread their
ideologies around the world. I found this article on the Oviatt Library after entering
euphemisms and war in the search bar for the ERIC database. The article is peer
reviewed and has many sources which makes it appropriate. The information about euphemisms
and their purpose will give me good ideas to expand my thinking when I am writing about
language and the military.
Simons, Greg. Mass Media and the Battle for Public Opinion in the Global War on Terror:
Violence and Legitimacy in Iraq. International Society of Political Psychology, 11
(2008): 79-91. Print.
Simonss article is all about the role of communication and how journalists use language to
control the wartime narrative. Simonss studies the Iraq War specifically, and shows how the
mass media is able to shape a persons reality about war. First, I found this article on Google
by looking up language manipulation pdf and then I located it in the Oviatt Library to
make sure that it was peer reviewed. I determined that the source was appropriate by looking
at bibliography and checking out some of the other sources. I am going to use this source in my
paper since I am going to write about euphemisms and how they affect our understanding of war.
Zhao, Xiaonan and Dong Jingping. Study on the Features of English Political Euphemism and
its Social Functions. English Language Teaching, 4.1 (2010): 118-121. Print.
This short article talks about euphemisms and how they are used to convey vague meanings. In
the political world, euphemisms are used to hide scandals and disguise the truth which is also
how it is used in the military world. I found this article in the Oviatt Library by searching for
euphemisms in the English language. I determined that this source was appropriate by
looking at the journal if came from and seeing that it was peer reviewed. I am going to use this
source in my paper to confirm my ideas about how the military uses euphemisms.
