I. Define the following:
1. root the base of all integers or equations 1pt
2. Conditional
equation an equation with only one solution but is not an equivalent
equation.
2 pts 3. Equivalent equations an equation with both sides are
satisfied by a solution. 2pts
4. Identity an identity of an integer or equation. 1 pt
5. Addition
equation an equation where addition property of equality is being used. 1
pt
II. Solve the following.
1. Five times a number increased by 4 is 44. Find the number. 10 pts
Let x be the number
5(x + 4) be the second number
Equation: x + 5(x + 4) = 44
Solution: x + 5x + 20 = 44
6x = 44 20
6x/6 = 24/6
X=4
Substitution: x = 4 = first number
5(4 + 4) = 40 = second number.
Check: 4 + 5(4 + 4) = 44
4 + 20 + 20 = 44
44 = 44
Therefore, th first number is 4 and the second is 40.
2. The sum of two consecutive integers is 125. Find the numbers.
Let x be the first integer
X + 1 = second integer.
Equation: x + x + 1 = 125
Solution: 2x + 1 = 125
2x = 125 1
2x/2 = 124/2
X = 62
Substitution : x = 62
X + 1 = 63

10 pts

Check:
62 + 63 + 1 = 125
125 = 125
Therefore, the first integer is 62 and the second integer is 63.
3. Find three consecutive even integers whose sum is 72.
Let x be the first integer
X + 2 be the second integer
X + 4 be the third integer
Equation: x + x + 2 + x + 4 = 72
Solution: 3x + 6 = 72
3x = 72 6
3x/3 = 66/3
X = 22
Substitution: 22 = first integer
22 + 2 = 24 = second integer
22 + 4 = 26 = third integer
Check:
22 + 22 + 2 + 22 + 4 = 72
72 = 72
Therefore, the 3 consecutive even integers are 22, 24 and 26.

10 pts

4. Mark is 8 years younger than Gerry. In ten years, he will be ten years
more than one-half as old as Gerry. Find their present ages. 3 pts only
Let x be Gerrys age. X + 10 = 10x
X 8 = Marks age
Equation: 10x = x/2 8 + 10
Solution:
10x x/2 = 18
-11x/2*2 = 18*2
-11x = 36/11
X=3
Substitution:
3 = Gerrys age
3 + 10 8 = 5 = Marks age
Check:
10(3) = 3/2 8 + 10
30 = 4

5. Michael has P 1.95 totally in his collection consisting of 25 cents and 5

cents. The number of 5 cents in three more than the number of 25 cents.
How many 5 cents and how many 25 cents does Michael have?
3 pts only
Let x be the number of 25 cents
X + 3 be the number of 5 cents
Equation: 0.05 + 0.25(x + 3) = 1.95
Solution: 0.05 + 0.25x + 3.25 = 1.95
0.25x + 3.3 = 1.95
0.25x = 1.95 3.3
0.25x/0.25 = -1.35/0.25
X = 5.4
