1.Sprue
A sprue is the passage through which a molten material is introduced into a mold, and the term
also refers to the excess material which solidifies in the sprue passage. In sand casting, the sprue
is formed by a dowel, which is removed from the sand to make the hole into which the metal is
poured.
2.Runner
A channel for the metal to get to the negative space left by the pattern.

3.Gate
A gate is a channel which connects runner with the mould cavity and through which molten
metal flows to fill the mould cavity
4.Pattern
A pattern is a replica of the object to be cast, used to prepare the cavity into which molten
material will be poured during the casting process. Patterns used in sand casting may be made of
wood, metal, plastics or other materials.

Data Analysis
As we can see in figure 1,the product not completely turn to the pattern that we want
because there is a defect which is misrun.

Figure 2:Misrun
This defect is incomplete cavity filling. The reasons can be: - inadequate metal supply, too- low
mould or melt temperature, improperly designed gates, .or length to thickness ratio of the casting
is too large. When molten metal is flowing from one side in a thin section, it may loose sufficient
heat resulting in loss of its fluidity, such that the leading edge of the stream may freeze before it
reaches the end of the cavity.
