Content Standard:
Choose ONE standard. Be
sure to write out the entire
standard, not just the number.

Learning Objective:

Anticipatory Set:

Choose ONE objective

that leads toward
mastery of the standard
Must be specific,
measurable, and
realistic.
Must have at least two
parts: learning and
behavior
Sometimes called a
"hook" to grab the
student's attention
Focuses student
attention on the
objective and the
purpose of the lesson
Activates prior
knowledge
Requires ACTIVE
PARTICIPATION from
ALL learners

Teaching-Input:
Using effective and varied
strategies, the teacher
provides information for
students to gain the concept,
strategy, or skill.

5
Teaching-Modeling:
Demonstrate and show
examples of what students
are expected to do (how to
solve the problem, answer the
question, do the activity etc.).

Topic: Calculating Volume

Grade Level: 6th

Description of Plan

Duration of Lesson: 50

6.EE.A.2: Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
a. Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For
example, express the calculation Subtract y from 5 as 5 y.
b. Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient,
coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity. For example, describe the
expression 2 (8 + 7) as a product of two factors; view (8 + 7) as both a single entity and a sum of two
terms.
c. Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas
used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number
exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order
(Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s3 and A = 6 s2 to find the volume and
surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.

Students will be able to understand and calculate the volume of a rectangular

prism using the formula V=LWH.

Teacher will reflect upon previous teachings of perimeter and surface area, reviewing
these concepts and comparing them to each other. Teacher will then introduce the topic
of volume and compare the new concept to the previous ones.

10

Teacher will incorporate collaboration between students, as well as independent work that
will be done with the promethean board.

10

The teacher will use manipulatives and a magnifier that will display what is being
done on the board. The teacher will build different rectangular shapes with various
lengths, widths, and heights. The teacher will model how to calculate the volume
of three different shapes.

10

The teacher will utilize thumbs-up as well as use whiteboards in order to check for
students understanding.

The teacher will ask the students to complete a problem with volume as an exit ticker.

The teacher will hand out a worksheet for homework in which the students will complete their independent
practice.

Actions or statements
made by teachers AND
students that summarize
lesson objectives.
Essential for helping
students integrate ideas,
make sense out of what
has just been taught,
and to improve their
chances of retention and
transfer.
Must be done BEFORE
Independent Practice

AFTER proper closure, it is

important to provide time for
additional practice. It may be
group or individual work in
class or it might be
homework.

10

Teacher will put together different shapes and then prompt the class to calculate the volume for each shape.
The students will then work on their whiteboards while the teacher walks them through each calculation

21st Century Learning:
Includes technology as well
as the 4 Cs: Critical Thinking,
Creativity, Collaboration, and
Communication.

The teacher will use thumbs up, the use of whiteboards and the worksheet as forms of formative
assessments to ensure students understand the concept.

The differentiation will manifest in content by displaying the content visually and kinetically.

The lesson will incorporate critical thinking, collaboration and communication.
