4.5.1.3 AAC, at its discretion and by agreement with the Vendor, may elect to upgrade certain
materials of construction for reasons of standardization.
4.5.2
Equipment Selection
Design criteria
4.5.3.1 The agitators shall be designed and manufactured on a modular basis and shall utilise
readily available standard sub-components where possible to facilitate the procurement of
spares and replacement parts for maintenance purposes and to facilitate
interchangeability.
4.5.3.2 All agitators shall be assembled at the Vendors premises prior to shipment, to ensure that
all sections fit correctly, to the satisfaction of the AAC Engineer or his representative.
4.5.3.3 The agitators shall be designed as to:
ensure satisfactory operation under all possible conditions at the point of use.
operate without causing undue noise generation and vibration in the immediate
surrounding area.
4.5.3.4 Safety guards shall be provided where necessary, in accordance with the Minerals Act
and Regulations.
4.5.3.5 Agitators, mounting devices, drive trains and seals shall all be designed for the design
pressure specified in the data sheet.

All agitators shall be able to run through a falling or rising liquid/air interface. (Batch
process requirements).
4.5.3.9 It is mandatory that the Vendor supplies all the information required for the drive motor.
4.5.3.10 The drive motor shall be capable of delivering 150% of the maximum absorbed torque
required during starting at 90% of the supply voltage.
4.5.3.11 The drive is normally selected to operate at 80% of rated motor power under normal
operating conditions.
4.5.3.12 The operating speed of the agitator shall not exceed 80% of the 1st critical speed.
Operation at a speed of 45% to 55% of the 1st critical speed shall be avoided unless
vendor design criteria prove that this is not necessary.
4.5.3.13 Subject to AACs prior approval, small agitators operating at speeds above the 1st critical
speed may be quoted. In such cases the operating speed shall be between 125% of the
1st critical speed and 80% of the 2nd critical speed.
4.5.3.14 Torsional natural frequencies shall not be within 20% of any existing frequencies e.g.
rotational speed, gear tooth meshing frequency, blade passing frequency, vortex shedding
frequency.
4.5.3.15 If required, the equipment vendor shall submit his calculations for critical speed and
torsional natural frequencies to AAC.
4.5.3.16 The equipment vendor shall advise AAC regarding the number, size and disposition of
tank baffles to achieve optimum mixing.
4.5.3.17 The maximum allowable run out is specified to be 1mm per metre of shaft length.
4.5.3.18 Impeller assemblies shall be designed to operate without run out and without a steady
bearing. The use of steady bearings shall be approached with caution and approval of
AAC must be sought.
4.5.3.19 Impeller assemblies shall be statically and dynamically balanced.
4.5.3.20 The Vendor shall state in his quotation the maximum run out expected at the impeller, with
the shaft in a free-hanging position.
4.5.3.21 The Vendor shall state in his quotation the maximum shaft deflection expected at the seal.
4.5.3.22 Agitator components that are rubber lined are to comply with AAC specification
AAC_SPEC_412004.
4.5.3.23 Agitator couplings within the vessels shall normally not be permitted.
4.5.3.24 The high speed coupling between the driver and gear unit shall be supplied and installed
by the Vendor. This shall preferably be a flexible coupling, and keyed to both shafts to
BS4235 or equivalent.

4.5.3.25 Couplings shall be selected to satisfy the coupling manufacturers requirements for power,
speed, torque, bending and service factor. The minimum service factor shall be 1.5 based
on the rated motor power.
4.5.3.26 The gearbox proposed shall have a successful history of operation in agitator service.
The Vendor shall submit a reference list.
4.5.3.27 The gearbox shall be selected for a minimum service factor of 1.25 based on the rated
motor power or, 1.5 based on the absorbed power whichever is the greater, based on
AGMA or other approved equivalent standard.
4.5.3.28 Gear reducers with spiral bevel, helical or herringbone gears are preferred.
4.5.3.29 Gear units shall preferably be oil lubricated except that low speed bearings on the output
shaft may be grease lubricated.
4.5.3.30 No gearbox oil leaks will be accepted, as oil is detrimental to the metallurgical process.
4.5.3.31 Provision shall be made to limit the gearbox operating temperature to 80C taking heat
transmission via the shaft in hot applications into consideration.
4.5.3.32 Ball and roller bearings shall achieve a minimum L 10h life of 60 000 hours. The Vendor
shall state in his quotation L 10h life of bearing proposed.
4.5.3.33 Any special tools required to maintain the agitator assembly shall be provided by the
Vendor and quoted separately.
4.6
4.6.1
The agitators will be manufactured and constructed in accordance with the Vendors QA
plan/standards or an approved international standard.
4.6.2
The Vendor shall submit welding and heat treatment procedures to AAC before any
fabrication work is carried out.
4.6.3
4.7
4.7.1
Drawing and documentation shall be to AAC standard, see Annexure A3 for more detail.
4.7.2
General arrangement drawing will show elevations and plans as required to indicate the
general outlines and important dimensions and clearances of the equipment.
4.7.3
The Vendor shall be required to present his drawings timeously for review and approval
by AAC, in order to check conformity to the specification and the AAC drawing office
procedure. Approval shall not be construed to relieve or mitigate the vendors
responsibility for accuracy and suitability of materials and/or equipment represented
therein. All drawings shall be in the electronic format (Microstation v8 or pdf).
