DOOR FOR FREEDOM

PROJECT PLAN PROPOSAL

Respectfully Submitted By: Lucia Chang
Date: May 2, 2016

GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

I plan on creating artwork on a classroom door to bring attention to
social injustice happening today to enrich the school in regards to starting
conversation about the unpleasant reality of the world.
I wish for the artwork to serve as a reminder to its audience about
social issues that occur not only on the news but in the school they attend.
I hope for this to provoke thought and awareness to those who
view it.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this project I plan to create an artwork that highlights the importance of activism through art.
I plan to paint a door that seems to have any person standing on the opposite side incarcerated
with fists painted on jail cell bars. With this image I hope to get the message across that anyone
can fall victim to social injustice. I plan to have an artist tag that elaborates on the subject so that
the viewer can make up their own interpretation and also read what the piece means to me.
PERSONNEL/MATERIAL RESOURCES NEEDED:
Painting supplies (i.e. brushes, paint, paint primer, artists tape)
Jorge Chang as a mentor
PROCEDURE AND TIMELINE:
April 15-17: Develop mock piece to get a basis of time and reference for actual art piece
April 18: Consult with Mrs. Wickware about mock piece and consider adding to it or changing
some aspects about it
Week of Apr. 18: Prime the door for painting, establish grid, draw concept in pencil
Week of Apr. 25: Begin painting image until completion for the next two weeks
Week of May 15: Start working on presentation and finish by end of project
SEE IT/BELIEVE IT:
I am creating an art piece on a door that will be seen by Clayton Valley students and staff and
that by placing it on a door its a good way to renew its audience every school year. I think that
because of the theme and its ability to connect with many people it serves a good purpose with
the community. Also, because of the incorporation of the the window and how the message is
conveyed through different face through the window it really is an ever-changing piece.

RESEARCH IT:
I hope to get feedback from viewers and I'm eager to gain knowledge on my subject. I truly hope
to discover how people will react to my piece. I will research some background on the issue at
hand to really get a good knowledge of exactly what Im discussing. I will consult a lot with Mrs.
Wickware regarding what to add to the mockup to better it and learn new information about the
topic.
BUILD IT/DO IT:
I will make this project come to life through the completion of the artwork on the door. I plan to
create this vision with paint and dedication. I will develop my mockup by April 22nd and
continue to improve it and add ideas through consultation with Mrs Wickware. When I have a
final clear vision, I will begin to transfer the ideas onto the door, probably by May 4th. I plan to
have the door completed before the week of the 16th, latest by the 20th. I will work on the door
on my own time out of school and on the weekends so that I have long amounts of working
periods. As I work on painting the door I will also work on my pecha kucha and presentation so I
have a good amount of time to think and put everything together. The week of the 16th I hope to
work with Mrs. Wickware and her history students to learn the reactions of students.
REFLECT ON IT:
I definitely will record my daily progress and feats and struggles I come across. I hope to grow in
knowledge and to strengthen my stance on social issues in all aspects. More specifically, I want
to deliver an important message that evokes emotion and compassion through storytelling. This
whole process will help me in progressing with my art and to showcase it in a broader manner
meanwhile acting as activism. Once I have completed the door, I will collaborate again with Mrs.
Wickware to gather intel on how her history students react to the art piece.
PROJECTED COSTS/EXPENSES & FUNDRAISING: $50-$100
DESIRED OUTCOME:
I hope to create an art piece that will impact its viewers and leave them with thoughts. I wish for
this to continue to be significant even after my graduation and I believe that it will always be a
relevant subject whether by repetition of history or the studying of it.
HOW WILL YOU GAUGE YOUR PROJECTS IMPACT?
As an artist, I always look for and appreciate feedback and critiques, so with a bigger project like
this one I am looking forward to feedback. How I will get that feedback is hopefully reaching out
to classes that are related to my theme. I also wish to get artist critiques from my art class to
better as an artist. I will work with Mrs. Wickware and her history students to hear what they
have to say about the art and how they react to it. I hope with this that I will have more to reflect
on and broaden my thoughts after hearing new perspectives on the subject.

POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS/DELAYS & IDEAS TO OVERCOME THEM:

An unforeseen complication may be a medical leave. If it comes to that and if the extent of it is
not too drastic than I will have to definitely clear my schedule to complete the project in time.
For smaller scale delays like sickness or a couple absences I will address them by working with
no distractions and working thoroughly.
IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT TO YOU AS AN ARTIST:
This project is a great platform to showcase my art in a broader manner than just in my art class.
I appreciate the opportunity to show my art to a number of people and even more so that this is a
very special piece not only to me, but I believe to many others. I am very happy to create art with
lots of meaning and significance to share. As an artist I feel grateful that this project is allowing
me to create art out of my normality.
IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT TO YOU AS A SOCIAL ACTIVIST:
I think that is project is an amazing way to start off anyones desire to become an activist. As I
create this project Ill become an activist and expand my thoughts. I know that this experience
will serve me good for my future and the way I choose to act in my life.
