French 190 is a first-year intensive course designed to give students a

basic and solid knowledge of French structures, a limited vocabulary, some
practice in reading, speaking, and some familiarity with sounds and
intonation patterns.

Fall 2008 RCCORE 100 First Year Sem

Fox,Helen

Through readings, discussion, videos, student presentations, visitors, and

active involvement in campus-based human rights organizations, students
considered questions that are currently debated in the human rights
community: How are human rights defined? Are human rights the same across
cultures? What human rights violations are currently taking place in our own
country and abroad? How should individuals and nations be held accountable
for human rights violations? How can citizens hold governments accountable
for human rights violations in our own country and around the world?
Students used writing as a tool of activism as well as a way to consider
intellectual questions, express their opinions, and use their creativity and
skill to honor the human beings whose rights need protection. They wrote
reading journals, letters to the editor and to Congress, speeches, op-eds,
and essays that expressed their personal involvement in human rights
activism. Each piece was written in two or more drafts, and responded to
feedback both from peers and the instructor.

Katherine achieved excellent results on all her papers through diligent work
on many drafts over the course of the semester. She worked on awareness of
audience needs, eliminating repetition, discovering her own opinions and
possible objections to those opinions, and deepening her critical thinking
skills. She gave substantial feedback to her peers on their writing, and in
the process, became a better editor of her own work. In class, she
contributed often to both large and small group discussion, and asked
perceptive questions that showed her growing understanding of the complexity
of cultural and ethical issues that permeate human rights work. Katherine
joined the student organization, Human Rights Through Education, and
participated fully in its group activities and planning sessions.
Fall 2008 RCLANG 190 Intens French
Anderson-Burack,Carolyn

This was a good semester for Katherine. She submitted work that was very
complete and thoroughly corrected using the workbook's answer key.
Katherine's writing showed excellent grammatical accuracy and was very well
organized.
By varying her vocabulary and structures she improved her
written work, but could still take a few more risks by using more complex
structures.
As shown in her consistently high test scores throughout the
semester, Katherine possesses a solid understanding of formal grammar
concepts. Although her class participation improved, she was often a bit too
quiet and only offered short, simple answers; as a result, the fluency of
her spoken French is not as strong as it could be. She should focus on this
area as she moves on to 290. She has good pronunciation. Both her reading
and listening comprehension are quite good. She had perfect attendance in
class and at co-curricular activities. This was overall a positive semester
for a capable student.

Katherine's well-directed effort produced very good results this term. With
perfect attendance in class and at co-curricular activities, she
consistently came prepared to class. Always attentive, she participated very
actively in class discussions throughout the semester, although she did not
always take advantage of opportunities to offer longer and more complex
comments. On the other hand, the structure of her speech is rather solid and
she is sure to self-correct for errors. With good pronunciation, she

expresses herself with appreciable fluidity. The generally high test scores,
which she maintained throughout the term, demonstrate a very good
understanding of formal grammar, which is also confirmed by her very high
mark on the final grammar exam. Her excellent command of grammatical
concepts is reflected in her writing which exhibits fluidity and an overall
good accuracy, although minor errors persist. Her written work is organized
and she has made improvements in variety and complexity. Both her listening
and reading comprehension are well developed for this level, as she can
grasp all main ideas and most details of a French text or lecture. Her
above-average results on the Proficiency Exam confirm that she is well
prepared for her next French class. A very positive semester for a capable
student who was a pleasure to have in class.

excellent grasp of the parallels between Pr??vert's poems and Les Enfants du
Paradis, the movie for which he wrote the script. Katherine knows how to
include material that has not been discussed in class and how to organize
her ideas. Katherine had a very good semester and it was a pleasure to work
with such a reliable, focused and pleasant student.

The course drew on Jacques Pr??vert's multi-faceted literary and

cinematographic production as a support to introduce students to the
historical and artistic background of the 1918-1950 period. The final
evaluation and grade reflect the students' participation in class and in the
co-curricular activities, the progress that they made in their writing (four
papers) and pronunciation, their involvement in the preparation of the
public presentation in which some of Pr??vert's poems were staged, and the
quality of their public performance.
Katherine complied with all the course requirements. In the first part of
the course, when we studied poems by Pr??vert, Katherine always came
prepared to class and stayed on task, albeit in a somewhat subdued manner.
She was involved in the material and was eager to learn. Her oral French is
good and her preparations reflected her involvement. She started memorizing
the poems that she had selected as soon as they were assigned to her. She
came to office hours for extra practice on her pronunciation. She knew her
part early on, and delivered a fine performance. Her written French ranges
from satisfactory to good. Her last paper was finely argued and showed an

We will examine French songs of the last few decades to see -and hear- how
they reflect a changing French society. Among the themes studied are racism
and immigration issues, war and protest and, of course, des chansons
d'amour. How are social issues like immigration and cultural and racial
tensions reflected in popular French music? Over the years how have poets
and composers expressed their patriotism and feelings about war? What
defines these songs as specifically or inherently French? How is French
music influenced by American music and vice versa? We will look at
cross-cultural fertilization and compare French and English versions of the
same song. Finally, in some instances we will also compare different
versions of a single song in French as a way of considering the contribution
of the performer.

Katherine Beck's conscientious efforts yielded excellent results. She

succeeded in improving all her skills, and she expresses herself easily in
French, both in composition and in conversation. Her spoken French is quite
good, with excellent pronunciation. From the outset her written work
demonstrated fluidity, clarity, and consistent attention to grammatical
detail. As the term progressed she concentrated on enlarging her vocabulary
and developing her style, and her work improved as her phrasing became more
characteristically French. A regular participant in class discussions,
Katherine added comments that revealed her very good level of understanding
of the texts and her sensitivity to nuances in the language. She carefully
completed all work in a timely manner. Attentive and engaged with the
material, Katherine always seemed well prepared for class discussion, and
