Creation of the Four Seasons
The Caddo Indians tell the story of the four seasons as four different rough drafts
of the most overall satisfying weather. After years and years of receiving complaints from
Native Americans all across America, The Chief knew he had to do something about the
climate. Before The Chief made winter, spring, fall and summer, the weather changed
everyday. One day it was snowing, the next it was so hot, wildfires began to occur. There
was no pattern in the weather, which upset the people of America greatly. It affected their
crops, trading, and everyday life.
First, The Chief started off with creating winter. At first he thought winter would
be perfect because all of the snow must melt during the day under the sun, right? It took
The Chief a few months to realize that this is not how it worked after all. Crops began to
die, paths began to be covered with snow and ice. People began dying due to their lack of
preparation. The Indians from the Northern tribes were very angry with The Chief while
as those in the Southern tribes were slightly displeased, but could cope with it. The Chief
decided to try and warm up America a bit more.
After failing with winter, The Chief tried raising the temperature some, making
spring. The complaints from the Northern Indians didnt stop coming. Their crops were
still dead and their paths were still iced, but the Indians towards the South were very
satisfied with the climate. After a few weeks, their crops grew, there was never any snow

to begin with, and the flowers began to blossom. But, with only some people satisfied and
the others still displeased, The Chief had to try again.
Next, The Chief decided to raise the temperature even more. Since the Native
Americans in the North were still complaining about the cold, why not make it even
hotter? So he did. This automatically set off those in the West and South. Temperatures
reached up to 115 causing droughts, wildfires, sickness, and crop failures. But in the
North, most places were at a moderate temperature. Their crops thrived, the weather
allowed for work and it was overall a pleasing time. Yet again, The Chief knew he could
not just please one half of his people. He need overall satisfaction.
The Chief decided to give it one last try. He lowered the temperature a bit and
created fall. The Chief thought to himself What could possibly go wrong with fall? Its
the perfect combination of all the seasons! But alas, as soon as he changed the climate,
the North began to see signs of winter. Cold temperatures and crops not doing well upset
the Northern tribes while those in the South and West were quite satisfied. They didnt
see much of a difference between fall and spring. Their crops were doing well and it
dropped to a nice comfortable temperature.
The Chief was disappointed because after a year of experimenting, he could not
settle on a final season. He could not live with himself if he only pleased some of his
people and upset the others. He finally settled to keep all four seasons and have them
alternate throughout the year. The Indians of America would have to agree to disagree.
