I.

Reading/ 5th Grade

Integration of Learning Outcomes

II.

Students will be able to develop the skill on differentiating between a fact and opinion.
Standards

III.

Standard - CC.8.5.6-8.H- Distinguish among fact, opinion, and reasoned judgment in a

text.
Anticipatory Set

IV.

Start with a pre assessment where students will have to decide whether a statement is a
fact or an opinion (Remind students this will not be graded).
Procedures
1. Hand students a pre assessment of different facts and opinions and have students
label which ones are facts and opinions (there will be some difficult ones).
2. Pull up a slide show on fact vs. opinion.
3. The slide show will have information on how fact and opinion are different and
how I know why.
4. Then, the slide show will have different facts and opinions and students must
guess by holding up a flashcard that says fact on one side and opinion on one side.
5. Ask students in between some of the slides, how could we change these facts to
opinions or opinions into facts?
6. Students will be split up into partnerships to play a fact/opinion sorting game.
Students will be given different card pieces that state a fact or opinion. Each

player takes a turn to flip over a card and they must put it in the correct spot that
states fact or opinion. Take turns until all cards run out.
7. Read the Dinosaurs story in their reading book with students and hand out a
worksheet which has facts on one side and opinions on the other side. Read
paragraph by paragraph and pause and have students write 2 facts or opinions
they found in the text.
8. Share what fact/opinions students found in the text.
9. There is an extra worksheet for students who finish early on unscrambling words
then stating whether the statement the students unscramble is a fact or opinion.
10. As a closure, have students work on a fact and opinion worksheet that will be
graded.
11. The next day, students will take a post assessment that has similar facts and
opinions.

each other and collaborate in problem solving). This lesson is also differentiated by the
worksheets/ slide show content.

Reflection on Planning

This lesson was planned in thinking about the comprehension skills students must master for the
test at the end of the reading unit on Waterhouse Hawkins. I think the pre assessment will be
interesting, it will introduce the topic to the students and allow me to see what students know
about fact vs. opinion. It will also help me assess my student for assignment 4/5. The slide show
is also effective because it is interactive with the students. It allows students to participate by
holding up their flashcards. After the slide show, discussion, and activity students will most
likely have much more information on the difference of fact and opinion as well as how I can
prove it. Students would have had lots of practice on this concept as well. The assessment
worksheet at the end will allow me to see if I need to go back to the concept or if the students are
ready to move on.
