    After WWII, China resumed its civil war between the Communist party and nationalist party. The Communists were victorious led by Mao Zedong, who established communist rule. Mao executed opponents and caused mass starvation through failed economic policies. Deng Xiaopeng later reformed China's economy, allowing private business, but was targeted by Mao. Mao then started the Cultural Revolution, closing schools and encouraging youth to purge opponents, throwing the country into anarchy. After Mao's death, Deng restored the economy but China remained politically communist. Later, citizens demanded democracy but were killed by the government in Tiananmen Square. Today China still prohibits many civil rights but has a growing economy.
