Overarchingthemeestablishinfrastructuretocoordinateandenhancediversityeffortsand
establish/assess/evaluatecampusstrategiesdesignedtofosterdiversityandinclusion.

Goalsandmetricsinplacefor20092010
1) AchievediversitygoalsinChartingtheCoursestrategicplan
Progresstodate:
FacultyGoalsDevelopedandimplementednewproceduresforfacultyhiring.These
procedures,alongwithassociatedflowcharts,checklistsandtimelinesweredeveloped
usingbestpracticesasidentifiedintheNSFADVANCEProgram,UCAffirmativeAction
GuidelinesforRecruitmentandRetentionofFacultyandotherrecognizedsources.
Metricsinclude:establishmentofnewprocesses,changeinnumberofwomenand
underrepresentedfacultyhired,changesindepartmentunderutilizationofwomenand
underrepresentedminorities.
StaffGoalsProvideeachViceChancellorwithQuarterlyReportsonAffirmativeAction
andDiversityProgresstodistributetoeachdivision/schoolinordertotrackeffortsto
diversifytheworkforceandidentifyareasofconcern.SuccessionPlanningIdentifyand
providesupportforstafftoparticipateinprogramsandactivitiesthatwillpreparethem
forpromotion.ProvideeachViceChancellorwithresultsofStaffatWorkClimateSurvey
fordiscussionwithDivisions/Departmentsanddisseminatethisinformationto
ChancellorsDiversityCouncil,DirectorsofCampusCommunityCentersandEquityand
Diversityassociations.
Metricsinclude:Changesinrepresentationforwomenandpeopleofcolor;progressin
disseminatingemploymentinformationtowomen,veterans,peoplewithdisabilities
andpeopleofcolor;careerstaffworkforcetrendsandcareerstaffavailabilityforSenior
ManagementGroup,Management,SeniorProfessionalGroup,andProfessionaland
SupportStaffgroup;staffdemographics;and,annualStaff@WorkClimateSurvey
results.
StudentGoalsCollectdataontheparticipationofapplicantsinyieldactivitiesto
determinewhichactivitiesbestsupportmatriculationtoUCSanDiego.Preliminary
informationforthisyearsrecruitingcycleindicatesthatstudentswhowerecontacted
byphonebyboardmembers,staff,studentsandfacultyweremorelikelytoenrollatUC
SanDiegothanthosewhodidnot.Itwasdeterminedthat19.5%ofAfricanAmerican
applicants,whowerecontacted,statedtheirintentiontoregisteratUCSD.That
compareswith10.5%oftheAfricanAmericanapplicantswhowerenotcontacted.
SimilarresultswereobtainedforLatinostudents,with21%ofthosewhowere
contactedstatingtheirintenttoregistervs.16%ofthosewhowerenotcontacted.For
MexicanAmericanstudents,theeffectwasnotasgreatwith27%ofthestudents
contactedstatingtheirintenttoregistervs.25%forthosewhowerenotcontacted.For
NativeAmericanstudents,thenumbersaresmallandwefoundthatthosewhowere
calledwereaboutaslikelytostatetheirintentiontoregisterasthosewhowerenot.

2) AppointFacultyEquityAdvisorsineachacademicdivision,graduateandprofessionalschool

JeanneFerrantetothepositioninsummer2008.
UndertheleadershipofDr.Ferrante,appointedandtrained10FacultyEquityAdvisors
inthefallof2008.EquityAdvisorshavebeenappointedineachGeneralCampus
academicdivisionandintheHealthSciencesandScrippsInstitutionofOceanography.
TheUCSanDiegoFacultyEquityWebsite(http://facultyequity.ucsd.edu/index.asp),
launchedinfall2008,actsasaportaltolocal,systemwide,andnationalresourcesfor
promotingequityinrecruitmentandretentionoffaculty.

3) Expandoutreacheffortstopublicschoolsandcommunitycolleges
Progresstodate:
EveningwithUCSanDiegofeaturingChancellorMaryeAnneFoxInadditiontothe
effortsoftheUCSanDiegoStudentEducationalAdvancementOffice,TheChancellor
andateamofUCSanDiegostaffanduniversitysupportersvisitschoolsinSanDiego
andImperialCountytoprovideinformationonpreparingforcollegeandpreparingto
attendaUCSchool.Over1000studentsandtheirfamilymembersattendedthree
presentationsinSanDiegoduringthe20082009academicyear.
UCSanDiegoCenterforResearchonEducationalEquity,Assessment,andTeaching
Excellence(CREATE)hasestablishedrelationshipswithGompersCharterMiddleSchool
(GCMS)andLincolnHighSchooltoincreasethenumberofunderserved,lowincome
youthswhoareeligibleforadmittancetocollege.UsingThePreussSchoolasthe
model,CREATEhasextensivepartnershipagreementswithGompersCharterMiddle
SchoolandLincolnHighSchool,bothlocatedinethnicallydiverseSanDiego
neighborhoods.CREATEandcampuspartnershavecollaboratedtoprovideinformation
tostudents,teachers,andparentsthroughoutthedistrict,especiallyatGCMSand
Lincoln,regardingUniversityapplicationproceduresandfinancialaidassistance.They
alsoarrangevisitstoUCSanDiegoandothercampusessothatparentsandstudents
learnfirsthandaboutthecollegeexperience.
Metricsinclude:numberofeventsforprospectivenewfreshmen,numberofeventsfor
prospectivecommunitycollegetransfers,numberofattendeesperevent,participant
evaluationofeffectivenessofevent,trackingparticipantsastheymatriculate.

4) Increaseyieldofenrolledstudentsfromunderrepresentedgroupsfromalargeradmittedpool
Progresstodate:
Fornewfreshmen,slightincreasesintheapplicantpoolfrom2008to2009were
observedforMexicanAmericanandLatinostudents,whileNativeAmericanapplicants
increased6.6%.AfricanAmericanapplicantsdecreasedslightly,buttheirpercentageof
theapplicantpoolremainedthesameyeartoyear.

5) ActivelyrecruitfreshmenstudentsfromawellmanagedPreussSchoolUCSD:increaseshareof
studentswhoenrollatUCSanDiegofromthisnationallycompetitivestudentbody

Dr.SandraDaley,AssociateChancellorandChiefDiversityOfficer,isappointedchairof
thePreussBoardofDirectorseffectiveJuly2008
ManagementAuditcompletedinAugust2008.Theadministrativestaff,theBoardof
DirectorsandtheEducationCommitteeareincorporatingrecommendationsfromthe
auditintothemanagementofPreuss.
TheOfficeofExternalRelationsraisedover$500,000inprivatedonationstohelpdefray
$1,000,000instudenttransportationcosts.
Ofthe96studentsinthePreussSchoolUCSanDiegograduatingclassof2009,94%
wereacceptedintofouryearcolleges;28%(27)areattendingtheUniversityof
California;30%(29)wereacceptedintoUCSanDiego;andofthoseacceptedintoUC
SanDiego,41%(12)willbeattendingUCSanDiego.ThePreussSchools2008/09
entering6thgradeclasswas67%Hispanicand7%AfricanAmerican.

TheOfficeofStudentAffairshassecuredmorethan$32Minmultiyearoutreachand
diversityrelatedgrantsoverthelastfouryears(20052009).Thesegrantshavebeen
fundedbytheU.S.DepartmentofEducation,theNationalScienceFoundation,the
AmgenFoundation,theNationalActionCouncilforMinoritiesinEngineering,andthe
HowardHughesMedicalInstitute.HealthScienceshasalsosecuredmorethan$6Min
diversityrelatedgrantsoverthepast5yearperiod.UCSanDiegowillcontinueits
effortstoobtainexternalsupportforoutreachanddiversityprogramsandtopromote
collaborationbetweennewandexistingprogramsonourcampusandinour
community.

CampusPolicies&Practice
Faculty
TheAssociateChancellor/ChiefDiversityOfficeractsasadvisortotheAcademicSenate
CommitteeonDiversityandEquity(neeCAAD),andattendsscheduledmeetings.
TocontinuetheimplementationofAPM210,theAcademicSenatehasapprovedalist
ofServiceActivitiesthatSupportDiversityanddesignatedasectionondiversity
activitiesontheelectronicbiobibliographyform.
TocontinuetheimplementationofAPM240&245,Deans,DepartmentChairsand
ProvostsareencouragedbytheChancellor,theSeniorViceChancellorforAcademic
AffairsandtheAssociateViceChancellorforFacultyEquitytoparticipateintheNSF
ADVANCE/PAIDChairTraining&Symposia.Startinginfall2009,newdepartmentchairs
willberequiredtoattendatrainingthatwillincludediversityissuesasanintegralpart
ofthetrainingcurriculum.
Anewprotocolfordualcareerfacultyhireshasbeenapproved.
Anewfacultyseparationsurveyinstrumenthasbeendeveloped.

UndergraduateStudents
Inanefforttoincreasepersonalinteractionwithprospectivestudentsfrom
underrepresentedminoritygroups,AffinityProgramsandanEarlyCallingCampaign
wereaddedtoYieldActivitiesinspring2009.Affinityprogramsprovideanopportunity
forprospectivestudentsandtheirfamiliestomeetwithsupportivefaculty,staff,
students,andadministrators.Faculty,staffandstudentsconductedanEarlyCalling
Campaigntoencourageadmittedstudentstovisitthecampus.
Inresponsetoalackofaffordablehousingforcommunitycollegestudents,UCSan
DiegobuiltNewTransferStudentHousingthatisscheduledtoopenfall2009.
Afterconductingextensivestudiesanddeterminingthattherearesignificant
matriculationchallengesforlesbian,gay,bisexualandtransgenderstudents,the
campuslaunchedInnovativeHousingOptionsforLGBTUndergraduateStudentsin
spring2009.Thishousingarrangement,offeredbyallsixcolleges,resultsinsupportive
clusteringandadvisementforstudentswhoselectthisoption.
TheDiversityCouncilestablishedtheCommitteeonRecruitment,AdmissionsandYield,
theDisabilitiesManagementCommitteeandtheDataCommitteetorespondtothe
followingcampusidentifiedneeds:tocontinuouslymonitortheadmissionsprocessand
implementacomprehensive,coordinatedundergraduaterecruitmentstrategy;to
addressissuesaffectingstudentsandstaffwithdisabilities;and,toprovethatan
institutionalresearchunitthataggregatesdatatoinformandinfluenceplanningwill

benefitthecampuscommunity.Membersofthesestandingcommitteesinclude:the
AssistantViceChancellorforAdmissions,theChairoftheDiversityCouncil,the
AssociateChancellorforDiversity,membersoftheAssociatedStudents,alumni,faculty
andstaff.Thecommitteeswillalsoincludeparentsandcommunityvolunteers.
EstablishedtheStudentAffairsOutreachRoundtable,developedbytheViceChancellor
ofStudentAffairstoencourageandstrengthenthecollaborationandcoordinationof
variousStudentAffairsunitsthathaveahandinoutreach.TheRoundtablegathers
informationonplannedoutreachactivities,solicitshelpandrecommendationsfor
programs,andsharesresourcesandbestpracticesintherealmofoutreach.
EstablishedtheDiversityWorkgroup,aStudentAffairsworkgroupdevelopedbytheVice
ChancellorofStudentAffairsthatiscenteredonenrollingadiversestudentbody,
fosteringthewellbeingofeachstudent,providingenrichingeducationalexperiences,
andpreparingstudentstoleadinadiverseglobalsociety.
EstablishedaStudentAffairsDiversityInstitute,afivedayintensivetraininginstitutefor
StudentAffairsprofessionalsondiversityandsocialjusticeleadbythecampusdirectors
oftheCrossCulturalCenter,WomensCenter,andLGBTResourceCenter.Participants
willbefuturediversityfacilitators,practitioners,andtrainers.
EstablishedaVeteranStudentWorkGroup,aspecialworkgrouphasbeenchargedto
lookattheissuesfacingthestudentveteranpopulation.Campuspartnersinclude
FinancialAid,TransferStudentServices,DeansofStudentAffairs,Counselingand
PsychologicalServices.

GraduateandProfessionalSchoolStudents
Toestablishacomprehensive,coordinatedgraduaterecruitmentstrategy,theOGS
DiversityOutreachCollaborationmeetsregularlytoplanupcomingrecruitmentevents
andleverageresources.Inaddition,facultyandstaffshareinformation,bestpractices
andstrategiestoattractunderrepresentedstudentstoUCSanDiegoforgraduatestudy.
UCSanDiegosupportstheSummerTrainingAcademyforResearchintheSciences
(STARS)whichprovidesqualifiedundergraduatestudentsfromallovertheUnited
Stateswithvaluableresearchexperienceandpreparationforgraduateschool.
UCSanDiegoparticipatesintheNSFSponsoredAllianceforGraduateEducationinthe
Professoriate(AGEP)whichprovidesfundingfortherecruitmentandretentionof
underrepresentedstudentswiththeendgoalofincreasingthenumberof
underrepresentedfacultyintheSTEMfields.

PostdoctoralScholars
UCSanDiegoconductsapostdoctoralscholarprogramtodevelopandtrain
postdoctoralscholarsfromdiversebackgroundstobecomeindependentscientists.The
programissupportedbyfundingfromNIHIRACDAandpostdoctoraltraininggrants.The
programoffersprofessionaldevelopmentworkshops;cosponsorseventswithcampus
organizationsthatpromotediversity;createscollaborationswithothercampus
programstoencouragestudentsatvariouslevelstopursuepostdoctoralresearch;helps
postdoctoralscholarsmentorthenextgenerationofresearchers;anddevelopsand
maintainspoliciesthatwouldattractadiversepopulationofpostdoctoralscholars.

ExecutiveSummaryofAffirmativeActionandDiversityProgressReportsaremade
availablequarterlytotheChancellor(includesallViceChancellorareas)andeachVice
Chancellor(fortheirrespectiveareas).Comprehensivereportsforeachareaare
forwardedtotheirrespectiveadministrativeofficers.
UCSanDiegoOutreachCouncilmembersreceivedtrainingtoconducttheHowtoGet
HiredatUCSDworkshopinanefforttoexpandthefrequencyandgeographic
distributionofpresentations.InJanuary2008,theOutreachTrainingTeambegan
presentingtheHowtoGetHiredatUCSanDiegoworkshop.Workshopswere
conductedattheUCSanDiegoCampus,communitybasedorganizations,churches,

workshops.
CareerConnectionisacomprehensivecareerdevelopmentprogramdesignedto
improveretentionbyassistingUCSanDiegoemployeestoachievetheircareergoals.
TheCareerConnectionMentorshipProgramwebsitewasdesignedandlaunchedwithin
thepastyeartofacilitatementor/menteematchingandpromotementorshipasan
effectivecareermanagementresource.Informationaboutthisresourcehasbeen
distributedbroadlytoensurediverseparticipation.Programevaluationincludeslong
termtrackingoftheparticipantscareermobility.

Undergraduates
TheStudentAffairsDiversityWorkingGrouphasbeenformedtocreateawarmand
supportivecommunitywherestudentsfromeverybackgroundcanflourish,providethe
chanceforallstudentstobecomeculturallycompetent,learnfromandaboutdiverse
others,improvetheyieldofstudentsfromunderrepresentedgroups,createequalityof
opportunityforstudentsatUCSanDiego,improvethecampusclimateforthosewhodo
notfeelwelcomedorvalued,andcreateprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesfor
StudentAffairscolleaguestodeveloptheskillsandperspectivesneededtoservea
diversestudentbody.
IntheEarlyCallingCampaign,aneffortcoordinatedbyAdmissionsandEnrollment
Services,2,804underrepresentedstudentswerecalledby146universitykey
administratorsandstafftoinformthempersonallyoftheiradmissiontoUCSanDiego.

Ofthe2,804students,1554weresuccessfullycontacted.Yieldnumberswerehigherfor
groupswhowerepersonallyreachedtoinformthemoftheiradmissionversusthose
whowerenot.Forexample,intheAfricanAmericanpopulation128studentswere
called,25ofwhichfiledaStatementofIntenttoRegister(SIR)resultingina19.5%yield
rate.Incomparison,191studentsdidnotreceiveaphonecall.Ofthe191studentsnot
called,theyieldratewasonly10.5%.Similarresultsofahigheryieldrateoccurredin
theMexicanAmericanandLatinopopulationgroups.
TheOfficeofAdmissionsandthestudentrunandstudentsupportedStudentPromoted
AccessesCenterforEducationandService(SPACES)organizedanovernightprogramfor
studentsin4thand5thquintileschoolsinCalifornia.54studentsattendedtheprogram
whichoccurredbeforethecampusslargeevent,AdmitDay.Ofthe54attendees,72%
(39)filedtheSIR.
DuringFreshmanAdmitDay,alumnichaptersandstaffassociations,alongwithcampus
communitygroupsfromAfricanAmericanandLatinocommunitieshostedaffinity
receptionsforAfricanAmerican,NativeAmerican,andChicano/Latinostudentsand
theirfamilies.Ofthe218studentswhoattendedthesereceptions,57%(125)filedthe
SIR.

Graduate&ProfessionalStudents
In2008,UCSanDiegowasinvitedtoestablishaninstitutionalchapteroftheYale
BouchetSociety.ThisgraduatehonorsocietyestablishedbyYaleandHoward
universitiesrecognizesoutstandingscholarlyachievementandpromotesdiversityand
excellenceindoctoraleducationandtheprofessorate.
Thenumberofgraduateandprofessionalstudentsenrolledincreasedby8.5%between
fall2004andfall2008,withaslightdecreaseof.58%inoverallenrollmentbetween
2007and2008.However,therehasbeena22%increaseinunderrepresentedgraduate
studentenrollmentbetween2004and2008,witha7.5%increasefrom2007to2008.
UCSanDiegoofferstheTribalMembershipInitiativefellowshiptoNativeHawaiiansand
membersoffederallyrecognizedtribes

firstyearoftheinitiative;fourapplicantsqualified,wereadmitted,andaccepted
admission.

Faculty
FacultyequityeffortsintheSchoolofMedicinehaveresultedindramaticincreasesfor
womeninallranksandseriesfortheperiod19972008.Mostnotableforwomenisthe
increaseinLadderSeries,from11%in19971998to16.7%in2008.Thenumberof
underrepresentedminorityfacultyintheLadderSeriesincreasedfrom0.9%in2007to
2.7%in2008.UCSanDiegohealthsciencesestablishedafacultydevelopmentprogram
in1999.ThisprogramisassociatedwithanincreaseintheUCSanDiegohealthsciences
retentionrateofunderrepresentedminorityfacultyfrom58%in1996to83%in2008.

Staff
HealthSciencesisworkingwithdepartmentstodeveloptheAssistantDepartment
BusinessOfficer(ADBO)positiontoaddresscareerdevelopmentandsuccession
planningforMSPandSMGleadershippositions.Currently,80%ofHealthSciences

departmentshaveanADBOposition.FiftypercentoftheADBOsarefemaleand20%
areminorities.
HealthSciencedevelopedandimplementedtheHumanResourcesAZTraining
programstoprovidefunctionalareatrainingtoaidjuniorstaffintheirprofessional
developmentinavarietyofsubjectareas.Thirtysevenparticipantshavecompleted
over28hoursofHRtraining,whichincludedEO/AApolicy.Oftheseparticipants,95%
werewomenand52%minorities.Sixtyfivepercentoftheparticipantsreceiveda
reclassificationorpromotion.Fortyfivepercentofthosepromotedwereminoritiesand
17%wereinanunderutilizedgroup.
AcademicAffairslauncheditsBusinessOfficerAcademy(BOA)infall2005.This
innovativestaffenrichmentprogramprovidestraining,guidanceandsupporttostaff
membersinterestedincareersasbusinessofficers.BOAparticipantscareerpathsare
trackedafterprogramcompletion.Todate,18of35participantshavereceived
promotionsorupwardreclassifications,withsevenattainingbusinessofficerpositions.
TheBOAencouragesapplicationsfromotherVCareas.

Climate
Demographicinformationanddiversityrelatedquestionsareincludedinthe
Staff@WorkSurvey,asatisfactionsurveyadministeredbyBusinessAffairs.Survey
resultsaresharedwiththeDiversityCounciltoinformtheiractivitiesand
recommendationstotheChancellor,aswellaswithcampusofficesthatprovide
programmingandresourcestoaddressdiversityrelatedconcerns.Thesurveycaptures
informationabouttheexperiencesandworksatisfactionofallmembersofthecampus
communityandinformationuniquetopeoplewithdisabilities,peoplefromminority
groups,womenandpeoplefromtheLesbian,Gay,BisexualorTransgendercommunity.
TheDiversityCouncilhasincreasedvotingmembershiptoincludetheExecutiveDirector
oftheOfficeforStudentswithDisabilities,DirectorofAccommodation,Counselingand
