two years he transferred to College of Hamilton where he
earned his bachelor [Chad Davidson]. Right out of college, at
the age of 20, Pound got his first job at Wabash College in
Crawfordsville, Indiana. Pound was a professor of English for
about one year and then was fired for letting a girl stay
overnight at his house. The college said they were removing
him for deemed immoral behavior. After this incident Pound
was displeased with the country, Pound hated how he was
treated 8 because he let a homeless student stay at his place.
Pound's first wife was H.D. or Hilda Doolittle, they met while
they were working at a writing company in Pennsylvania, but
their relationship did not last very long because Doolittle father
did not like Pound. Doolittle's father 9 thought Pound was a
horrible husband and cared too much about his job. Pound told
his parents the he was fleeing the country and going to
London, his father wasn't happy with, but did fund the trip for
his son. Pound flee 10 to London brought a different side of
Pound, he was mad at America and was ready to start a new
life.
Pound's poetic career did not start to the 1910's, but his writing
career started 11 in the 1900's. At the beginning of Pound's life
in London, he worked for London Newspaper, and also was

writing style, and personality. Yeats loved how Pound because

he wasn't shy to speak his mind in his writing, and he did not
care what anyone thought about him Pound's first sample of
writing was the "Lume Spectre" in 1908, this was a poem and a
book that was well-known in England. After the "Lume
Spectre" came 12 out Pound was eminent across London 13 and
every writing company wanted him, but he figured out that he
was great at this, and that he 14 need no help 15 so he went his

and Vorticism.
Imagism is a movement that explains situations, poetry through
literal, and rigorous pictures in the 20th century. "Most of
Pound's Imagistic poems varied with different types of culture,
especially Chinese and Japanese culture"(Wilmer). Pound's
finest imagistic poem was "In a Station of the Metro" which is
comparing "the appearance of random faces in a packed
subway station in Paris to the appearance of flower petals
against a backdrop of the dark wet bark of a tree"(Evans). The
Imagism was very popular in the British poetry, every single
poet was using it from 1912-1914, but Pound was getting mad
about this to 17 because he thought people were using it wrong.

back, and it lasted for about another two years. Pound said that
he created this movement 21 because of his late wife H.D. or
Hilda Doolittle.
The next movement 22 Pound created was Vorticism, it was not

Pound introduced it to the poetry world. Not as many people

wanted to part of this movement, so Pound felt like he was
different because of this, and that is what he wanted. Vorticism
was mainly influenced by the Cuban culture 23. Pound's life and
poetic career was 24 going great between 1908- 1914, but
Pound got a new ideal for poetry, he was starting to write about
his political beliefs, and this degraded Pound's career. People
would think that World War I and II did not have an impact on
poet's lives, but it did, especially Ezra Pound.

in 1914 World War 1 started and one's Pound best friends died
in action, Gaudier- Brzeska. This made 26 Pound write a in 27
1916 poem about his close friend that he had lost in World
War 1 which was called "Gaudier-Brzeska: A Memoir".28
After this point in Pound's career, he was becoming someone
different 29 and his writing was different. Pound started writing
on his views of the War and what he believed. This
dramatically 30 changed people's views of Pound because they

started announcing his beliefs 32 on an Italian radio station. He

started 33 to state why fascism was great, his love for Germany
leader Adolf Hitler, and Italian leader Benito Mussolini. Pound
did not only talk about this on his station, but also his hatred
for American, and how the government there was corrupted.
The American government did like this, so the arrested Pound
for treason, but Pound was lucky. Dr. Winfield was a huge fan
of Pound work, he 34 was also a fascist, so Dr. Winfield ruled
Ezra Pound mentally ill. This help Pound out a lot, instead of
spending a lifetime in jail, he was going to spend a couple of
years in ST. Elizabeth Hospital. St. Elizabeth was the biggest
mental institution in the United States, it was located in District
of Columbia, and had about 2 thousand patients. Ezra Pound
was not the first famous person to attend St. Elizabeth, but St.
Elizabeth never had someone as intelligent as him. Pound tried
to escape St. Elizabeth plenty of times and was almost
successful for almost 35 all of them. Pound had plenty of run-in
with other patients because of his beliefs, but Dr. Winfield kept
him protected by putting him in isolated solitary. "Pound spent
12 years in St. Elizabeth, from 1946 to 1958" (Walls). While
there, he wrote one of his most famous poems or collection of
poems, "The Cantos".36 After Pound's release, he spent the rest
of his life in Italian, he 37 had a child with Dorothy
Shakespeare, and he was also having an affair, which lead 38

Pound best work was no doubt the "Cantos", but he also wrote
other poems or collection that stood out in the modernism era.
In Pound's poem "A Girl", the narrator, which could be Pound
or is his lover, uses a tree to symbolize a person. "The branches

example of Chinese culture, the setting is in a small Chinese
village called Chokan, and the poem is set 42 in chronological

Lord you. I never laughed, being bashful" (Pound). This is 46 an
example of how each stanza or paragraph started in the poem.
"A Virginal" is a very complex poem 48,47 when looking at the
title, the first thing that pops in minds is probably sex or a
virgin, but the title also can mean a small keyboard instrument.
In "A Virginal" Pound uses white throughout the poem to
show imagery and expresses his pain or agony. "A Pact" is a
poem about Pound's relationship with Walt Whitman, he
explains how he didn't like Walt, and he 49 thought he 50 did

these are what made and shaped Pound's poetic career, his uses

of different culture, imagery, and other poetic devices made

him a respected man around the poetry community.

Pound poetic career was dramatic, it wasn't perfect, and it had

many of flaws, but what the man did was remarkable. He
created two successful movements that played roles in
modernism, he 52 gave a new way for other culture, which then

in modernism.
