vortex, baseball etc.)

Lesson content:

Introduction

10 mins

Following on from the previous lesson Overhand Throw Development students will start the
lesson revisiting the chronological steps of an overhand throw. This will be conducted on a court,
however can be reduced to half a court if needed.
Instructions for the warm up activity will be given while the students are sitting down. Once the
explanation of the task is completed, students will be put into groups and an opportunity for
questions is provided. (An effective strategy to place students into groups is to continuously
count from 1 4, until all students have been given a number; all 1s will go together etc.)

Baked Beans
6 large plastic Hoola-Hoops will be placed in the middle of the court in a horizontal line, ensuring
there is enough space between them.* Students are then arranged into groups of 4 (+ 2 groups of 3,
if a class of 30) and allocated a hoop and 15 beanbags. Students line up in their group on the first
base line. On the whistle, students take turns to perform an overhand throw attempting to throw the
beanbag into the hoop for it to Bake. Once students have had a turn, regardless if they got it in or
not, they go to the back of the line and wait for another turn. After 3 minutes, the teacher blows the
whistle and the beanbags in each hoop are counted. Students are then encouraged to play again
starting from the second base line.

Extending or reducing the time and/or lengthening or shortening the base line can
accommodate for different year levels and levels of ability. This also assists in
accommodating for any children with disabilities.
Groups are to try and beat their first attempt, rather than other teams. This eliminates
competition, and focuses more on the process of an overhand throw (Meldrum, K., & Peters,
J. 2012).
This activity incorporates numeracy as children add up their total beanbags as well as find
the difference between the total of the first attempt and the second attempt.

Students are asked to assist in collecting their groups equipment and returning it to the front of the
court, before getting a drink and sitting on the floor ready for Development.
