DrivingQuestion/Proposal
Theclassof2016Interiordesignstudentshadtocompleteayearlongcapstonethat
embodiedtheirknowledgefromthepreviousfouryears.Interiordesignisacareerintendedto
createacoherentspaceforanyhomebyincorporatingvisionaryplanning,knowledgeand
technicalsolutionstoachieveadesiredhome.Thus,studentdesignersweregivenascenario
providedbyTheAmericanSocietyofInteriorDesigners(ASID)whichgavestudentsthetaskto
designasecondfloorspaceofachildren'scabin,locatedinthePennsylvaniaPoconoMountains.
CertainrequirementssuchasADAbathroomsandNKBAkitchensmadetheprojectchallenging
butstudentsovercamethosechallengesbyfurtherresearchandtrials.Thefinalproducthadto
havespecificdesigndeliverablesinordertopleasetheclient.Studentdesignersusedtheinterior
processwhichconsistofvigorousplanning,researchandanalysistomeettherequirementsof
thescenario.Bycreatingafloorplan,elevation,invoice,designboardandbusinesscards,
designerswereabletoshowcasetheirfinalproductduringcapstonenight.
III.
ProjectTask
DuringthemonthofNovember,Interiordesignstudentsweregivendesignscenariosin
relationshiptoachildrenscabinlocatedinthePennsylvaniaPoconoMountains.Thedesign
scenariowaswrittenandprovidedbyTheAmericanSocietyofInteriorDesigners(ASID).The

studentshadtodevelopacompanynameandcompleteadesignscenario.Thetaskswasto
designthesecondfloorspaceofacabinandmeetthespecificrequirementsoftheclient.The
clientinthescenariowasKrisChapman,heisacampdirectorwhoislivingintheresidential
spaceabovetheactivitycenter.KrisChapmanneededthestudentdesignerstocreatearelaxing
andcomfortingambienceafterahecticdayfilledwithchildren.Thestudentdesignershadto
developdesigndeliverableswhichconsistedofafloorplan,elevation,furnitureplan,color
palette,invoiceanddesignboard.
Thefloorplanhadtobewelldetailedandhadtoincorporatefurniturearrangement.The
lobby,conferenceroom,directorsoffice,ADAAccessibletoiletroom,livingroom,kitchenand
thedirectorsbedroomneededtobeincorporatedintothefloorplan.Thestudentshadtoarrange
eachroomintoafunctionalmannerinaccordancetotherequirements.Therequirements
addressedplacement,accessibilityandprivacy.Initiallythedesignscenariohadgiventhe
studentsafoundationdrawninscalewhichthestudentshadtoconvertintoscale.The
designscenariogaveminimumsquarefootagesforeachroomthatcouldntbeexceeded.Also,
thedesignscenariospecifiedtheamountoffurniturethatwasrequiredineachroom.Inaddition
tothefloorplan,studentshadtocreateanelevationofthelobbydrawninscale,theelevation
hadtocreateawelcomingandfriendlyfirstimpressionuponentering.Theelevationhadto
includetreatmentsforthefloors,walls,windows,furnishings,fixturesandcolor.
Furthermore,designershadtoorderfinishes,fabricsandcolorschemesfromonlineretail
stores.Similartothefloorplan,thesampleshadrequirementsforthesafetyofthechildrenand
adults.Thefabricsampleshadtobefireretardant,whichstatesthatthefabricsareless
flammable.Anotherrequirementwashavingslipresistantflooring,thisrequirementwas

emphasizedbecauseofADAaccessibility.Inaddition,theinteriorcolorpalattehadto
complimentthePoconoMountains,thecolorschosenwereprimarilywarmcolors.Lastly,the
studentsneededtoprovideaninvoicebillingallthefurnishing,accessoriesandlightinginthe
livingroomandthelobby.Despitenothavingabudget,studentshadtoselectreasonablypriced
furnitureandfixtures.
IV.
Research
StudentsbeganworkingonthedesignscenariobyresearchingthePoconoMountains.
ThePoconoMountainislocatedinnortheasternPennsylvaniaandoverlooksthedelawareriver
andthedelawarewatergap(PoconoMountains).ThePoconoMountainsisapopulartourist
locationbecauseofitsendlessactivitieswhichconsistofhiking,fishing,skiing,andother
sportsfacilities(PoconoMountains).ThroughouttheweatherseasonsthePoconoMountains
experiencesnow,drysprings,warmsummersandbeautifulautumns(PoconoMountains).
ThekitchenhadtofollowNKBAkitchenguidelines.NKBAguidelinesarelayoutsthat
allowinteriordesignerstocreateasafeandfunctionalkitchen(NKBAGuidelines).These
guidelinesaddressconcernsregardingclearancespace,storageandfunctionality.Designers
madethedoorwayenteringthekitchen32incheswideandthedoorwaywhichdidntconflict
withanyappliancesorfurniture(NKBAGuidelines).Thestove,refrigeratorandsinkcouldnt
bemorethan26inchesapart,becausetheseareconsideredaworktriangle(NKBA
Guidelines).Designerscouldnthaveanymajorworkpatternscrossingtheworktriangle.Also,
studentdesignershadtomakespaceclearancesforseatingarrangements.AcrucialNKBA
guidelineismakingtheworkaisleatleast42incheswide(NKBAGuidelines).NKBA

guidelinescontinueduringthedesignprocess,thisconsistofpickingspecificsinks,kitchenfans
andmicrowaves.
ThecampdirectoremphasizedtheimportanceofdesigningarestroomthatwasADA
accessible.Thus,studentshadtoresearchandincorporateADArestroomsintotheirfloorplan.
TheAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct(ADA)becamealawin1990,whichprohibitsthe
discriminationagainstindividualsinanypubliclocation(2010ADAstandards).Studentshad
tomeetthestandardsforaccessibledesignsinthesecondfloorrestroom.Thismeaning,toilet
seatshadtobeseventeentonineteeninchesbasedonthestandardsetbyADA.Also,designers
hadtoensurethattheflooringhadenoughclearanceforwheelchairaccessibility.Also,
wheelchairaccessibilityisanimportantfactorinmeetingADArequirements.Grabbarshaveto
bepresentforstabilizationandtransferringindividualsifneeded.Thegrabbarsmustbe
mountedlowerforbettersupport.Thegrabbarshadtobemounted3333offthefloor(2010
ADAstandards).Lastly,thedoorsshouldopenoutwards,thispreventsthedoorsfromhitting
thetoiletseatandanyaccessories.
II.
Goals/PriorKnowledge
ThroughoutthefouryearsattendingSouthwestCareerandTechnicalAcademy,Interior
Designstudentshadtomasterincorporatingtheprinciplesandelementsofdesigntoeachproject
theyhadeverydone,leadinguptoseniorcapstone.Principlesofdesignreferstotheway
elementsofartareincorporatedintodesign.Thisincludesbalance,emphasis,movement,
proportionandunity.Duringtheconstructionofthefloorplanstudentshadtofocusonmaking
theroomsflowcoherentlywhilehavinganequalbalanceoffurniture.Additionally,theelements
ofdesignincorporatestheprinciplesofdesigncolor,shape,texture,spaceandmass.Students

usedtheelementsofdesignwhilecreatingtheirelevation,studentshadtomaketheroomlook
aestheticallypleasingwhilemeetingtheclient'sneedsandwants.Incorporatingtheelementsand
principlesofdesignwasvital,thestudentsusedtheseelementswhileconstructingthefloorplan,
elevationandbusinesscard.
Inordertocreatetheelevation,floorplanandbusinesscardsstudentshadtobeproficient
inAdobeIllustrator.Priortothecapstone,Interiordesignstudentswererequiredtotakegraphic
designclassesinordertobeabletocreateelectronicdeliverables.Thishelpedvariousstudents
executealluringfinalproducts.GraphicDesigngavestudentstheresourcetocreateadesign
electronically.
V.
Reflection
InteriorDesignstudentsworkedontheirseniorcapstoneasapair.Theyhadtodevelopa
companynameandshowcasetheirtalentasaduo.Onespecificdesigncompany,JAJSdesigns,
consistedofJoanAlfonsoandJanetteSilva.Theybothdecidedtodividetheworkbasedontheir
strengths,abilitiesandskills.JanetteSilvafocusedondevelopingthedesignconceptandJoan
Alfonsofocusedondevelopingthefloorplan.JAJShadahardtimedesigningthelayoutforthe
floorplanwhichmettherequirementsofthescenario.Thestudentscontinuouslyfailedtomeet
certainrequirementsandhadtofixtheirerrors.Thisdidnotdiscouragethestudentsbutmade
themexperiencethelifeofatruedesigner.
Janettewasabletodesignanelevation,createaninvoice,selectfurnitureandcreatea
designboard,whichshedidntknowshewascableofdoing.Theseniorcapstoneallowed
JanettetoshowcaseherabilitiesinIllustrator.AlthoughJanetteSilvawillnotbepursuinga

careerinInteriorDesignshelearnedvarioususefulassetsthatcanbeappliedtoherfuturecareer.
Suchastimemanagement,satisfyingtheclientandmeetingrequirements.
