had the most land

continents outside of Europe? The continents outside of Europe had to
get used to being controlled by another country and things couldve
been really bad

A. The Opium War (1839)

How do you think opium led to a war in China?


1. Which 2 countries fought in the Opium Wars? China and Great
Britain
2. What was the main reason for the conflict between these 2
countries? Opium was illegal in both countries
3. Look at the chart: Why do you think the war began in 1839? More
chests of opium were brought into China
4. What problems did Opium cause for the people of China? Young men
from rich families businesss slowed and standard of living fell which
resulted in a collapse of public services
B. The Treaty of Nanking (1842)

What was agreed upon in this treaty?


1. How many conditions were favorable to the Chinese? How many
conditions were favorable to the British? 7 were favorable for China; 6
were favorable for British
2. Which 3 conditions were most favorable to the British (write the
condition, not just the number)? Why did you choose these 3?
1. The ports of Canton, Amoy, Fuchau, Ningpo, and Shangai to be
opened to British trade and residence, and trade conducted according
to a well-understood tariff.
2. Three millions of dollars to be paid for the debts due to British
merchants
3. All prisoners of war to be immediately released by the Chinese
I chose these 3 because the ports gave the British an advantage with
trade, the 3 million dollars would help the British merchants, and lastly
all prisoners of war would go home to their British families
3. What do you think the effect of this treaty will be on the people of
China
I think itll make them mad because China would be in debt for a while
and probably go through a depression

The Boxer rebellion was caused by all the influences coming in from the West

they could claim their land

They wanted to claim land before the other countries did
