26
If there are three products inherent to the Dominican culture, these are tobacco, beer and rum, and
they are intimately linked to the history and way
of life of our people, in addition to being very important export items of our economy.
If you like to enjoy one of the three, take advantage of your holidays in Santo Domingo and delight yourself smoking a good cigar accompanied
with few sips of rum, as well as the warmth of our
climate will make you wish for a fra, which in
our popular culture is synonym of a beer.
Tobacco:
Its origin goes back to the Taino culture, used as
an important element of their religious and healing rituals, also for pleasure and to diminish the
fatigue caused by some hard labor.
More than five centuries later, the world enjoys
the different brands manufactured in the country
and which place Dominican Republic in one of the
top notches of tobacco export worldwide, due to
the extraordinary quality of our product and its
characteristics of texture, flavor, aroma and color.
For a pleasant experience in cigar tasting and
sharing the Dominican cigar culture, you must
visit the cigar clubs in our capital. But, if you just
want to learn about the cultivation and elaboration of tobacco, we recommend visiting the Tobacco Museum, in Santiago de los Caballeros.
Beer:
Dominican Republic has a strong culture for beer
which dates way back to the first inhabitants of
the island, the Tainos, who elaborated a type of
beer using yucca and corn as the base ingredients,
which they consumed in occasion of their festivities and Areitos (ceremonial dance among the
indigenous in the Hispaniola Island).
A fra, or simply ceniza or vestida de novia,
as it is widely called when is almost at freezing
point, is the way most Dominicans like to drink
their beer, the drink always present in all celebrations, no matter if a small family party or a Dominican extravaganza. As an exporter the country is
among the most important in Latin America.
Rum:
Its the national drink, and its origins are closely
linked to the sugar cane brought from Spain into
the New World by Admiral Christopher Columbus.
It is extracted from the sugar cane juices and later
passing through several processes in which the
expertise of the manufacturers plays a significant
role that contributes to its final quality.
Nowadays, the Dominican rum has positioned
itself atop of the list in the international market,
where strong brands stand along by producing
rum of well-defined aroma and body and by
diversifying their productions making different
ranges of rum, according to their aging, and even
also gin, vodka and whiskey.
