Dear Sir or Madam,

I Mariecus Jarvis would like to apply for the Youth Counselor position at the Midtown YWCA of
Minneapolis. I am a Minneapolis Native that spent the past two years working as a Science
Teacher at a Minneapolis Charter school and finishing my Masters of Education at the University
of Minnesota. At career panel, I had the unique opportunity to talk with Jazmin _______
title_______. As we were talking, I was able to learn about her work with young girls. I was very
interested in her work, so I choose to begin researching the YWCA. Fortunately, I found an
organization that truly embodies the causes of which I would like to dedicate my life. While
teaching at the Harvest Network of Schools, my passion to create opportunities for young black
women in STEM fields has multiplied. Through my work and college experiences, I have seen
many young women with the desire to enter into science fields that are typically dominated by
white men. I have also seen these same women later cast aside their hopes due to a lack of
support to help them strive. It is my goal to do whatever is necessary to make their dreams a
reality and be their advocate. When I saw that YWCA was dedicated to: empowering women
and girls I felt that this was truly an organization I wanted to explore further.
For the last two years I have worked as the 7th and 8th grade science teacher within the Harvest
Network of Schools. On a daily basis I instructed upwards of 150 girls and boys ages 12-14. I
was able to create meaningful relationships with each and every one of these students and keep
accurate records to describe their learning. In addition to teaching, I worked as the
Environmental Leader. Through this job, I was responsible for maintaining our partnerships with
companies such as geeksquad, boston scientific, and 3M. These companies were willing to come
in and work with our scholars on various projects. I am proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and
Powerpoint, and have experience working with various types of data entry software. In addition
to science I have a strong passion for art of writing and speaking. As a undergraduate I competed
on the competitive forensics team earning state titles in poetry interpretation and becoming a
national finalists in persuasive speaking. I continue to coach high school level competitors and
have presented my research on circadian rhythms at many national conventions.
Thank you for getting the time to get to know me better. I look forward to meeting you and truly
hearing more about the YWCA. I hope through my letter you see that I am truly passionate about
empowering young women so they have the opportunity to pursue male-dominated fields. I will

reach out to you next week if I do not hear back from you. Again, your organization truly
epitomizes the values I try to employ.
