Waves

By: Joe Wade & Jaycen Milner

Wavelength
Wavelength is the distance between successive
crests of a wave, epically points in a sound wave or
electromagnetic waves.
When you study waves you will find that wavelength
and frequency are related by an equation
________: Speed of the wave__________ x Wavelength
when you measure the length of the waves there is a
separate equation
Wavelength= Speed of the wave x Wavelength
There are many examples of wave length one of
which is the distance between the crest of two ______.

Amplitude
This is the distance from the rest of the position to
the crest position which is half the vertical distance
from a trough to a crest.
The __________ could be measured as the distance of
a line segment that is perpendicular to the
______position and extends vertically upward from
the rest position A.
To find the amplitude of a wave you have the use the
equation.
Equation A=D/F (amplitude equals distance divided
by frequency)

Crest

The crest of a wave is the point on a wave with the

________value or upward displacement within a cycle.
A crest is a point on the wave where the __________ of
the medium is at a maximum.
The crest of mount Everest is about _______ feet
about the ground

Trough
A trough is the _______ point and the medium sinks to
in the rest position.
An example of a trough is the lower part of a wave or
a hill
If you are surfing and the wave collapse on you then
you are in a ______.

Electromagnetic

Electromagnetic waves are waves which can travel

through the vacuum of outer space.
Sound waves are examples of mechanical waves
while light waves are examples of electromagnetic
_____.
Electromagnetic waves are created by the vibration
of electromagnetic charge.
This vibration creates a wave which has both an
electric and _______component

Mechanical
A mechanical wave is a wave that is an oscillation of
matter, and therefore transfers energy through a
medium.
While waves can move over long distances, the
movement of the medium of transmission the
material is limited. Therefore, oscillating material
does not move far from it initial ________ position.

A sound wave is an example of a mechanical wave.

Sound waves are incapable of traveling through a
vacuum. Slinky waves, water waves, stadium waves
______rope waves and other examples of mechanical
waves.
Each requires some _______ in order to exist

Longitudinal

Longitudinal waves, also known as I waves are waves

in which the displacement of the medium is in the
same direction as, or the opposite direction to, the
_______ of the travel of the wave
One way to categorize waves is to say that they are
longitudinal waves and transverse waves.
In a longitudinal wave, particles of the medium are
displaced in a direction parallel to energy to
transport
Examples of longitudinal waves include sound waves
(vibrations in pressure, particles of displacement,
and particle velocity propagated in an elastic
medium.)
In longitudinal waves, the displacement of the
medium is parallel to the propoganda of the wave.

Transverse

This is a moving wave that consists of oscillations

occurring perpendicular to the direction of energy
transfer.

If a transverse wave is moving in the positive x

direction, its oscillations are in up and down
directions that lie in the y-z plane.
An example of a transverse wave is light.

Calculating wave speed

There are several ways to calculate the speed of a

____
The first equation: ________________
The second equation: __________________
Example,

8/4 = 2
wave speed equals 2
