DataModelsandRepresentation
Therelativemeritofobjectversusfieldmodelsforquantitativerepresentation
is a subject of ongoing debate in the fields of cartography and geography.
MichaelGoodchild (1992) haswrittenextensively aboutobject versus field
modelsinageographicinformationsystem(GIS).Intheobjectmodel,features
aregenerally representedas points, lines, orpolygons, andso thismodeis
knownasthevectordatamodel.Thefieldmodel,whichtypicallyrepresents
square features as a set of uniformsized cells, is known as the raster data
model. The advantages and disadvantages for visualization and quantitative
representationinbothmodelshavebecomeevidentanddependonthescale
