It all started with the soft lullaby of my mothers voice reading me stories, poems, and

books each night. I had been nursed by the power of words, raised by the meaning of each
influential sentence, and taught by the way these humans transformed language into whatever
masterpiece they desired. See, it all started with letters, punctuation, sentences and stanzas. Once
I was old enough to allow my own eyes to dart across the pages and permit the significance of
what was written to dance before my mind, my love for language budded and evolved into
something I cannot live without. W.H. Auden once said, A poet is, before anything else, a
person who is passionately in love with language.
The infinite power of language carries across oceans and countries, defeats the
impregnable notion of time, and dominates ones emotions. The carefully chosen words along
with the meticulously formed sentences have the indescribable capability to evoke emotions of
love, loss, despair, isolation; a spectrum of sentiments to permeate ones senses. From a young
age, it was clear to me that writingcreating a universe of emotion with the use of language
was more than just a hobby; it was my passion. The way I can communicate my feelings onto
paper and observe as a variety of emotions glide across the readers face elicits an ineffable
feeling within me. The written word is a form of art. Art is supposed to make you feel. And
creating artwork that so many people can passionately relate to is a reward within itself.
I am passionately in love with language and its power to unite a country or tear it to the
ground. There is magic within every being that has a strong control over language. Where would
human beings be without the ability to think, to feel, to express, to write, to speak? What would
we as humans be without language? I wouldnt be the same person I am today if the beauty of
language hadnt been introduced to me at such a young age. It has made me a compassionate,
articulate, open-minded and caring person.

Moreover, growing up in a Hispanic household, I am able to appreciate works in both

languages, such that of Federico Garca Lorca, Robert Frost, Pablo Neruda, William
Shakespeare, Gabriel Garca Mrquez, and more. Being able to recognize the different flows of
the passages in each language is a gift I hold dear. Being able to express myself in more
languages than one is a blessing. My life has revolved around the works and expressions of
remarkable humans with the magical property to control language to their whim. My life was
built on the foundation of language and how vital it is to survive in todays world. I can vastly
relate to W.H. Audens saying, A poet is, before anything else, a person who is passionately in
love with language.
