Wiesel, Elie, and Marion Wiesel. Night. New York, NY: Hill and Wang, a Division of
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2006. Print.

Night is a book about Ellie Wisel and his life and experiences during the holocaust.
The book goes into great detail about the horrible events that people lived through
during the holocaust, Ellie and his father amongst these people. This book explains
how even the most religious and hopeful people lost all of their faith and became
hopeless. This book explains Hitlers terrible tactics against these people. Also, it
gives you a great perspective of all of these people that were held in the camps and the
many killed. Men and the physically fit were sent to the work camps. Almost
everyone else was sent straight to the crematorium. Hitler would brainwash children to
follow him to make his job easier. Several years later the Holocaust comes about and
all these children that were brainwashed had now become part of a killing machine.
Night had changed a lot throughout his years at the camps and this book expresses this
change very clearly.
Bartoletti, Susan Campbell. Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler's Shadow. New York:
Scholastic Nonfiction, 2005. Print.
Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitlers Shadow is a book about Hitler and his
brainwashing powers. This book provides us with a great sense of what Hitler did to
brainwash the youth to follow in his footsteps. It describes the propaganda that he
used to make his killing factories so successful. The book explains the reason behind

OShea 1

Hitler wanting all of these people on his side. The book states that Hitler felt that if he
had the youth on his side it would make his job a lot easier. The book also states that
the Nazi teachers, from the day that the kid started school, would drill into being a
Nazi. The first thong that the teachers taught was to greet by saying Heil Hitler.
Hitler would also train these youth to have the minds of a killer. In this book, page 6,
pictures a young kid, probably around age 6, dressed in an SA (storm trooper uniform)
raising his hand in the Nazi Salute. There were millions of boys and girls who
belonged to the Hitler youth and bore the name proudly. Hitler, and the Nazi party
promised these young Germans a great future in a great Germany- if they joined the
Hitler Youth. The book also explains why Hitler targeted these youth. The text states,
Hitler admired the natural energy and drive that young people possess. He
understood that young people could be a powerful political force that could help shape
Germanys future (Bartoletti, 7). Toward the end of the book Bartoletti talks about
how powerful these kids became when the Holocaust came about. It explains how
well the youth executed exactly what Hitler wanted. They did this because of their
worship of him.

were brainwashed into supporting the fascist cause at Hitler Youth

indoctrination camps. The boys were treated as if they were in the military.
This website is filled with pictures of these boys marching, learning in
classrooms, and saluting to Hitler. This website also shows pictures of the kids
in classrooms studying diagrams promoting physical fitness, having their
heads shaved, and killing. While some of these pictures may seem charming,
the swastika armbands worn by these children show the dark truth. These kids
were trained to kill, and kill as much as possible. The Nazis represented it has
a German version of Boy Scouts- which it certainly was not. 'In the last days
of the war the Hitler Youth was mobilized in the German version of the Home
Guard and fought on both eastern and western fronts. A lot of them were
sacrificed in Berlin, some as young as 12 or 13. This website does a
spectacular job of showing the youth of this horrific with the use of pictures.

Guide. Ed. MiE Editor. N.p., 18 Dec. 2012. Web. 10 Apr. 2016.

This website explains the propaganda that Hitler used to get all of these people,
especially the youth, on his side and to follow him. It shows several pictures of
posters and pictures that were used as well as an explanation of each picture
explaining what exactly the message was. The first picture shows a 10 year-old
member of the Hitler Youth looking up to an idealized, God-Like version of Adolf
Hitler. The website states, The message was that children as young as 10 years
old should serve the leader by joining the organization. For Hitler believed that

devotion should be fostered as early as possible. The next Hitler Youth poster
shows Adolf Hitler interacting with a group of young Germans. Hitler acted like
he actually would care for these children in the Hitler youth just to get them to
join. When the Holocaust came around these children wouldve been trained and
be killing machines for Hitler. The caption reads Children, what do you know of
the Fuhrer? In the poster, the usually much more sternly portrayed dictator is
depicted as an approachable figure although still an authoritative one who is
friendly towards children. Hitler understood that his power depended on every
German citizen making sure he came acrossed as a good person to get as many
people as possible to help execute his mission.
