GenderdiscriminationisacivilrightviolationthattakesmanyformsSexualharassment,
pregnancydiscriminationandunequalpayforwomenwhodothesamejobasmen.
Thisisissuehasbeengoingonsincethemidtwentiethmanywomenwereexpectedtostay
homewithlimitedaccesstoschooling,thiscausethemtohavelittleeducationsotheonly
optionsthattheyhadwaslowpayingjobsorunskilledjobs.
Theyhadthemindsetthatwomensearningswerentasimportantasmenearningwhenitcame
tofamilysupport.
Sinceearlyageswomenhavebeentreatedless.makingitlookaswomenwerentasusefulfor
society,theyalsowerestillfightingforwomensrighttovote.
Thistypeofdiscriminationissomethingthatstillcontinuestillthisday,mainlyinjobs.
Butthisdoesnthappenonlytowomenithappenstoallgenders,butthistypeofdiscrimination
ismainlyknownbywomenwhostilltothisdayfightforrightsandbeingtreatedbetterbythe
oppositegender.
Thefirstrealeffortstoachieveequalityforwomenoccurredinthe1800s.Duringtheearlypart
ofthatcentury,coeducationalstudiesattheuniversitylevelwereofferedforthefirsttime.
State
laws
werepassedwhichallowedwomentoretaintheirpropertyaftermarriage.Also,thefirst
women'srightsconventionwasheld.Manywhosupportedwomen'srightsbecameactiveinthe

In1878,CongressconsideredaConstitutionalamendmentgivingwomentherighttovote.
Althoughtheamendmentfailed,itwasrevitalizedeveryyearforaperiodof40years.The
movementforwomen'ssuffragewasled,amongothers,bySusanB.Anthony,whowas
arrestedforvotinginapresidentialelection,andbyLucyStone,whowasoneofthefirst
Americanwomentoretainhermaidennameafter

Thewomensrightsmovementhaslostduringtheninthamendmentbutduring1960smore
womenwererejectingtheroleofhousewifeandmanyenteredtheworkfieldwhichleadtomore
demandforequalrightsandequalopportunities
Whydoesthishappen?

So,whydoesthishappen?Therearemanyfactorsofwhythishappenbutthismainlyhappens
becauseofthedifferentculturesthatsomecountryand/orstateshave,manyfamiliesraisetheir
kidsthinkingthatthewomenarenotasusefulforworkasmen,theythinkthatwomencant
provideasmuchgoodsasmancanwhenitcomestosupportingafamily.
Meninmanysocietiesareseenasiftheyhavemorepowertoshapesocietyandcontrolit
andmakestrongdecisions,butwomenareonlyseenasweak,thattheycantmakedecisionor
controlasociety.
Eventhoughgenderrelationscanvaryfromsocietytosociety,womenarestillconsideredless
insomeaspectsofsociety.

Genderbaseddiscriminationcanaffectachildsgrowth,thiscancausethemtobecomeviolent
adultsinthefuture.
Womenwhousuallyfeltlikevictimstogenderbasedviolencesometimesneverreportedthe
incidentsfearingtheywouldlosematerialsupportfromtheirabusers.

becomeinsecureofthisperfectimagethattheycreatethroughthisprogress.
Insomesocietieswomenthatdonotbearasonareinfluencedtomakeasexchangetotheir
childand/orcanleadtodomesticviolencefornotbearingason.
Anotherexampleofgenderdiscriminationisineducationprogramswhichincludesathletic
programs,femaleathletesarenotprovidedthesamebenefits,treatments,servicesand
opportunitiesasmaleathletes.
Sexualharassmentisanotherproblemthatwomenseemedtofacein1980whichwasableto
benoticebecauseagroupofwomendecidedtostandupforthis,theydescribedthisas
anotherformofgenderdiscriminationwheretheysaythattheyfeelunwelcomeorhavetomake
inappropriatepromisesinexchangeforsexualfavor.

Howtopreventthisfromhappening?

Sohowdowepreventthisfromhappening?slowlytheSupremecourtintryingtomakea
changetothisproblem,theycreatedaprogramcalledtheEEOCguidelineswhichinclude
directionsforemployersonhowtoprevent,recognize,investigate,andresolvesexual
harassmentwithinbusinesses,inonehandthisissomethinggoodbecausetheyaretryingto
changethissituationbutintheotherhandtheyaresayingthattheyhavetohavesevere
psychologicaldamageinordertoproveahostileworkenvironmentwhichthiswassaidin1993,
in1997theysaidthathostileworkenvironmentgenerallydevelopsovertime,andthevictim
mustshowsevereorpervasiveconduct.
in1998theCourtassertedthatcompaniesmustestablishpoliciesagainstsexualharassment
bydescribingwaystoinvestigateandcorrectwrongdoingsandtheyshouldcommunicatethese
policiestotheiremployeesinthatsameyeartheCourtruledthatanemployeecanseek
damagesfromhisemployerevenwhenthevictimissexuallyharassedbyanotheremployeeof
thesamesex.
Thisalsoappliestoschoolswhichtheyshouldmakeapolicyprohibitingsexualharassmentand
genderdiscriminationthismustbeinformedtostudents,parentsandemployeesandalsoInthe
academicsetting,whensomeoneclaimsharassmentthisincidentmustbereportedto
authoritieswhohavethepowertocorrectthesituationwithinthesystem.
