Introduction to your Participatory

Research choice and your justification
I have chosen the exploratory research as a way to
address my puzzle. The reasons behind this choice is
the way allwright defines this kind of research.
He emphasized the idea of understanding rather than
solving a problem.
He valued the quality of life in the classroom rather
than the quality of output.
"We research our practice, the puzzle concern the
teacher as well as the learner, so , in order to
understand both of the element should work on it.
All the principles he gave are applicable to my puzzle.

Put "quality of life" first.( communication)

"Work primarily to understand language
classroom life. (Whey do not they use English?)
Involve everybody.
Work to bring people together. ( to use a
language which is understood by the both
elements)
"Work also for mutual development. ( to develop
the students ability to use L2)
Make the work a continuous enterprise.

What is the experience or experiences

that lead towards your question or puzzle
My puzzle arose from my teaching practice, in
which I was a teacher for couple of hours. I
needed to understand the reasons behind some
actions of the students so I can deal with it in the
classroom.( although understanding the reasons
may sound like an impossible mission.) I taught 3 rd
graders in a primary polish state school, whose
English language level was pretty good, so they
could understand me and I also understood them.
The most important fact is that IAM Not polish and
I am not a user of the polish language.

Experience continuation
The first incident which caught my
attention was when a 3rd grader kept
speaking in polish. My first reactions
were to explained to him that I do
not understand your language and to
insist that he should use English
language. But he kept speaking
polish and I could not do any thing
towards it.

What is the context of your

study?
non polish person teaching English
language as a FL to 3rd graders in a
polish primary school.
The school is Maria Dbrowska primary
school in Komorw. Class 3 A,B.
During English language lessons.

What have you done to narrow down

your question/puzzle?
I tried to find critical friend and
discuss together
Talk to your university
supervisor
Any other way?

What is your puzzle?

How should we (teacher-learners)
deal with situations in which some
students refuse to speak in English?

What are the ways of collecting data

to better understand your puzzle?
Talking to the mentor teacher and
other teachers
Talking to the students themselves.
Observing the students behaviour in
other teachers.

What have you done in

order to:
bring people together..
mutual development..
make the work a continuous enterprise
(Allwright,2005, p.360)
I started learning polish language.
I tried to peruse the students and explained to them
that we need to speak in English in order to understand
each other.
I sometimes ask them to give me the polish equivalent
of a word so I can learn it.

Final reflections
What have you learned?
Every time i think of This puzzle it makes me more
confused. As to wither should I search for the reasons
behind the students actions or should I ignore them
and concentrate on how to react to them. If I chose
to ignore them then I will not be addressing the
students individual needs. And if I chose to search for
the reasons in one stage or another I will be
generalizing in the sense that I will be responding to
all the situations with the same reaction.
I learned that the students were more eager to speak
in English when i asked them about their culture.

What have you done in

order:
Integrate the work for understanding
into the existing working life of the
classroom.
(Allwright, 2005, p.360)
One thing which I tried is to speak
Arabic whenever they would speak
polish. I did that just to give them the
feeling of when you hear something
which you do not understand.
