The Pledge
There have been a lot of arguments about the pledge on whether Under God should stay
in the pledge. The whole point of the pledge was to celebrate the 400th anniversary of
Columbuss voyage to America(One Nation Under God?). It was also to promote (and sell)
the flag of the United States in public schools (One Nation Under God) . In the original Pledge
under God wasnt in the pledge until Congress added it in 1954. The Pledge now became a
patriotic oath. When Congress added Under God the whole point was to make it patriotic and
not to go against other peoples religious views. Keeping Under God in the pledge is the same
thing as keeping god in our motto In God We Trust. So keeping Under God is only making
our nation more patriotic. Under God should stay in The Pledge because it symbolizes America
and what we stand for.
Taking Under God out of the pledge will go against what our founders believed in.
Americas founders wished to make God a part of public life (The Pledge of Allegiance). The
founders of America relied on God, that God will guide them on their choices and on what
America is trying to represent. Keeping Under God in the pledge will be honoring the spirit
of the nations founders (The Pledge of Allegiance). If Under God wasnt in the pledge then
the pledge could be the pledge of any country. (The Pledge of Allegiance). There is a reason on
congress decided to put Under God in the pledge. They did it because in our history God has
always been a part of America so it is reasonable for Americans to put Under God in the

Pledge of Allegiance. This does not mean that everyone is forced to say the Under God in the
Pledge of Allegiance; Everyone has the freedom of speech. So they can all decide for themselves
they want to mention Under God or not.
Under God was not a religious affirmation, but, as the administrations brief put it,
a simple acknowledgement of the role that faith has played in the formation, political
foundation, and continuing development of this Country. (Justices Keep Under God in
Pledge). There seems to be no reason on why it should be a problem for Under God to be in
the pledge. In the quote it specifically said that mentioning Under God in the pledge was not
meant for it to be religious, it was to show respect to our founders that faith has played a role in
making America the country that it is. Not everyone is bothered by having Under God in the
Pledge of AllegianceAn April Gallup poll showed that 91 percent of the public wanted the
pledge to remain as it is, while the other 8 percent wanted to see Under God expunged.
(Justices Keep Under God in Pledge). 91 percent of the population isnt bothered by having
Under God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Looking at this poll it can be that almost all of the
population agrees with having Under God in the pledge.
When the words Under God are said in the pledge, its turning it into a prayer nor is it
meant as a prayer. "When someone says the pledge, theyre not praying to God, theyre pledging
allegiance to the country, the flag and the ideals of the country. (Under God In Pledge Of
Allegiance Upheld By Court). When you are saying the pledge, you are saying that you agree
with the choices and ideas that America has. You are not praying to God, when you say those
words there is some of a religious aspect but it isnt turning it into a prayer. We have the word
God mentioned in our national motto In God We Trust, we have it plastered all over our paper

money and coins. So how come people are okay with these things but no okay to have it in our
pledge if you are not saying it as a prayer.
In our pledge we are not saying the pledge as a prayer, we are saying it because we agree
with what America wants to do for the country and because it is patriotic to say it. We are not
saying it because we want to offend other peoples religious views, If people dont want to say
the words then they arent forced to. Keeping the words Under God will make our founding
fathers proud that we believe that God has helped guide America.
