Porfirio Diaz- Was a soldier, politician and later a President of Mexico
Ignacio Zaragoza- Was the general of the army that defeated the European
power.
Napoleon III- Leader of the French army, was the most powerful army in the
world
Maximilian- Was the emperor of Mexico
2. What role did each of these people play?
They each had a part in the battle of Puebla.
3. What is the biggest misconception about Cinco de mayo?
That May 5th is the day of Independence for Mexico.
4. What caused the conflict that led to the Battle of Puebla?
After the Mexico American war it lowered Mexico's treasury and America took land form
Mexico.

Porfirio Diaz had an ill equipped army and headed towards the city of Puebla from Mexico City
to take it from the French. They took out the cavalry and a thunderstorm pushed the French out of
Puebla which sparked the want for independence.
6. How long did the conflict last and in what year did it end?
The conflict lasted 6 years and ended May 15, 1867 when Napoleon withdrew his troops.
7. What was the end result of the conflict?
This led to Mexico getting its independence from Spain in 1812.

- Mole- Rich sauce made with a combination of chocolate, chilies, and other
spices. Can be red or green depending on ingredients. Often served over chicken,
even though turkey is more traditional.
- Chipotle- A smoked jalapeno chili.
- Chilaquiles- A dish of fried tortilla strips typically topped with a spicy tomato
sauce and cheese.
- Enchilada- a tortilla dipped in a chili sauce then filled with meat
or cheese, and rolled up

The Mexican army's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. Celebration of Mexico's culture.
Celebration of Mexico's heritage.
2. What was France's excuse for invading Mexico?
France sent ships over to Mexico demanding them to pay their debts. Since they could not they were
waiting and invading useful land in Mexico.
3. Why doesnt the whole country celebrate the Cinco de mayo?
It is mainly celebrated in Puebla, but it is not a federal holiday.
4. How many Mexican soldiers and French soldiers were involved in the Battle of Puebla?
2,000 Mexican soldiers and 6,000 French troops were involved in the Battle of Puebla.
5. Why was the initial victory at Puebla important in Mexican history?
Even though it was not a strategic victory it put the freedom movement going and helped Mexico towards
their indpendence.

People from Mexico are all around the U.S. spreading their culture and traditions from Mexico.
5. Name and describe two popular decoration made for this holiday.
Mini Sombreros- The traditional charro costume of the Mexican mariachis always includes a fancy
sombrero. While you may not have a real sombrero, you can easily get a whole bunch of painted or
embroidered mini sombreros to use as part of your decor.
Serapes- ponchos many Mexicans wear in different parts of Mexico, serapes or sarapes are a great way to
incorporate the bright colors
