Reflection
Despite the increase of the Philippines literacy rate is the problem on the
quality of basic education Filipinos receive. Some solutions were drawn for the

past years and the most recent action handed over by the government is the
implementation of the K+12 program. It is aimed to enhance basic quality
education and produce well-prepared graduates.
I believe in the governments intention of producing globally competitive,
socially, emotionally, physically and mentally capable graduates. Under the
traditional basic education curriculum, a twelve-year education content is
crammed into ten years probably contributing to the fact that many students
reach college with no solid decision as to his goals and what career to choose.
Here enters the mismatching of college courses. Some high school graduates
take careers they dont want to pursue, others take secondary courses after
graduating from college. For the past years, weve been producing unripe and
unprepared individuals facing the real world. Most graduates are too young to
enter the labor force and it results to culture shock and confusion. Despite of the
good things that the K+12 program promises to offer is the reality that there are
still a lot of problems surrounding education that has nothing to do with number
of years. Inadequate qualified teachers, large number of students, uncomfortable
classrooms and insufficient reading materials, equipment and supplies. There is
also a high dropout rates recorded which is expected to become higher with the
implementation of a longer education program.
The K+12 program has good intentions but it cant achieve its goal if there
are lacking elements because of unpreparedness and a society that I fear will
have a hard time adjusting to change. Yet the least thing that we can do is hope
for the best of this program and prepare ourselves to become the solutions to the
problem of poor basic quality education in the Philippines. Someday, we will
impart knowledge to the generations that will follow us and whether its the
traditional or K+12 program of education, may we impart quality teachings.
