Stoichiometry Lab
Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to synthesize magnesium oxide and determine percent
yield.
Procedure: The procedure that was followed was from Stoichiometry of Magnesium Oxide.
Data: 2Mg + O2 2MgO

Calculations:
1. Mass of Magnesium = Mass of crucible and Magnesium Mass of crucible
0.11g = 12.31g 12.20g
2. Theoretical yield of Magnesium Oxide = Mass of Magnesium
1 Mole of Magnesium

1 mole of Magnesium Oxide

= 0.18g MgO

3. Experimental Yield of Magnesium Oxide = Mass of Magnesium Oxide and the crucible

0.21g MgO = 12.41g MgO 12.20g
Experimental Yield of MgO

4. Percent Yield of Magnesium Oxide = Theoretical Yield of MgO

Conclusion:
The experiment resulted in the synthesis of 0.11g of Magnesium with an excess amount of
Oxygen to form 0.21 grams of magnesium oxide. The percent yield of this lab was 120%
because the theoretical yield was 0.18g while the experimental yield was 0.21 grams.
Sources of Error:
There were two sources of error that could have been made during the stoichiometry lab. The
percent yield could have been over one-hundred percent because the triple-beam-balance may
not have been zeroed properly. In addition, the crucible may have been too hot when the
measurement was taken. This could have resulted in an inaccurate mass due to convection.
