Task/Design Brief:
You and your team have just been employed by a new design and innovation
company. You have been asked to identify an aged care or disability issue and
then design and build a robot which will help to improve their quality of life. This
robot is a prototype only and not to scale. As designers you must ensure the
robot:

functions correctly,
is visually appealing
and is safe to use

A range of additional materials may be used to improve the success of your robot
such as fabric for the user's comfort.
You will present your ideas to the company at the conclusion of the unit.

You will need to:

1. Provide a brief statement of intent that outlines how you will address the design
brief by describing what aged care or disability issue you have identified and
explain how you intend to solve these problems. What are you going to do?
This is to be no more than one or two paragraphs long.
2. Provide a short video diary that summarises the design process that you
followed to build your robot (no more than 5 minutes).
3. Mathematics Task 2 - "Costing your robot", by filling in the Robot Costing
Spreadsheet and include this as a printout.
4. Mathematics Task 3 - "Testing the capabilities of your robot", and include this as
a printout
5. Building, testing and demonstrating your robot prototype.

Assessment criteria:
COMPONENT

1. Statement of intent
a. Provides a clear statement of intent that describes the
aged care or disability issue and clearly describes how
it will be solved. Clear reference to the design brief
mentioning the proposed robots functionality,
appearance and safety.
b. Provides a statement of intent that describes the aged
care or disability issue and identifies how it will be
solved. With reference to the design brief mentioning
the proposed robots functionality, appearance and
safety.

a. Video that clearly communicates your design
process. This includes a collection of evidence
that showcases your research, development of
ideas, planning, problems encounter (testing) and
how you attempted to solve them. The video also
needs to show the steps involved in creating your
robot. Video is entertaining and is well edited to
summarise your progress. Use of video features
to improve your video.

Steps to completing task successfully:

1) Refer to the assessment task and assessment criteria to ensure that you
understand the expectations of the task and how it will be marked.
2) Research the aged care or disability issue you are going to address.
3) Document your progress daily so you can successfully complete. Don't forget
to include video evidence that can be compiled into a short video presentation.
4) Complete Mathematics Tasks 2 and 3, and provide a printout of your work in
the written journal.
5) Complete , and provide a printout of your work in the written journal.
6) Refer to the previous Robot Challenges and the option challenges if you need
guidance with your robot.
7) Always research, brainstorm ideas, draw a few sketches and experiment
before making your final robot design.
8) Make sure that you have checked your written journal before submitting it.
Poor grammar and typos detract from the quality of your work.
9) Use the set robotics lessons and your own experimenting to create the robot
prototype.
