The RISD museum was an interesting artistic environment that showcased all

different types of artwork from all over the world. Kudzanai Chiurais piece Iyeza
inspired me because of its use of religious imagery and violence being portrayed
together, hand in hand. The artist was able to capture these images using a film
camera as the piece its self was a video about how Christianity has been used to
support and expand European colonialism in Africa over the last three centuries as
put by the RISD Museum. The artist used lines to draw the viewer through the video
as well as the constant use of motion to keep things interesting. My entire final
deals with the relationship between theology and self morality. I also quite loved
Kota Ezawas piece Untitled Film Still, which is a print of his put on top of a light box
which I quite liked because of the interesting compositional flow the piece had as
well as the shapes created by the different colors he used. The expression captured
on the face of almost a blank stare is something I try to capture a lot in my work
because of the idea of more happening behind the eyes than what is being let on.
Ezawas piece is an appropriation of Cindy Shermans Untitled Film Series. Roy
Lichtensteins Pyramids II were also very dynamic pieces I found interesting. They
were made with Oil and Magna on canvas and they display three periods using
depth of field and create the shapes through the use of dark bold lines and popping
colors that ultimately work together to create a beautiful composition. All of his
colors belong in the same realm with is something I will use in my own final pieces.
Ultimately all of these pieces worked together to create ideas for my finals.
