In protists, the process of obtaining oxygen and removing

carbon dioxide takes place directly through the cell membrane.
In earthworms, the skin is the boundary surface through which gas
exchange takes place.
Colored substances, such as hemoglobin, in the blood carry oxygen
and carbon dioxide between the respiratory surface and the body cells of
many multicellular animals.
In grasshoppers, gas exchange takes place through a system of
branching air tubes that carry air directly to all the cells of the body.
Air enters and leaves the grasshopper's body through 10 pairs of
openings.
Connected to the grasshopper's tracheal tubes are several large,
collapsible, balloonlike chambers that help to pump air in and out
of the tracheal system.
The thin layers of tissue that are richly supplied with
blood vessels provide a large surface area for gas
exchange in many animals that live in the water.

The gas-exchange organs in humans are the __16__

, which fill a large
part of the human chest cavity. These organs are separated from the abdominal
cavity by the __17__ a muscle that forms the floor of the chest cavity. Each lung is
enclosed by- a double-layered membrane called the __18__.
Air usually enters the human respiratory system through the nostrils, which lead
into spaces in the nose called the __19__. Next, the air travels through the __20__,
or throat. After leaving the throat, air passes into the voice box, or __21__.
Stretched across the inside of the voice box are two pairs of membranes called the
__22__, which enable humans to make sounds.
A.
B.

alveoli
bronchi

C.
bronchial tubes
AB. inhalation
D.
bronchioles
AC. trachea
E.
exhalation
The voice box runs directly into the __23__, or windpipe, which divides into
two cartilage-ringed tubes called __24__. Each bronchus enters the lung and
branches into smaller tubes called __25__. These tubes subdivide until they
become a group of tiny tubes called __26__. Each tiny tube ends in an air chamber
that contains several cup shaped cavities, called __27__, where gas exchange
takes place.
There are two phases of breathing. __28__ forces air out of the lungs.
__29__ draws air into the lungs.

cell surfaces
D.
grasshopper
B.
